President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GHS 1 billion Revitalisation Fund for Bawku. This significant investment aims to restore the town's status as a major commercial hub. The fund will be disbursed over a three-year period, from 2026 to 2028.

The establishment of the fund follows a period of sustained peace in Bawku after a prolonged conflict. President Mahama expressed hope that continued calm would attract businesses and professionals back to the area. The conflict had previously forced many residents and enterprises to leave, severely impacting the local economy.

This initiative fits into Ghana's broader economic recovery and regional development strategies. Bawku, historically a key trading centre, saw its economic activities severely disrupted by the conflict. The government's commitment of GHS 1 billion highlights the importance of regional stability for national economic growth. Data from previous years showed a significant decline in economic output from the Upper East Region due to the unrest.

President Mahama confirmed the government's commitment during a citizen engagement in Bolgatanga. He stated, “I believe that if this peace continues, Bawku will bounce back to its original glory as a major commercial area of our country.” He also noted that the conflict made it impossible to post national service personnel or medical doctors to Bawku in the previous year.

The Revitalisation Fund will be managed by a committee comprising key government figures. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance, will serve on this committee. The Regional Minister and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, now Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, are also members. Mr. Ayariga represents Members of Parliament from the Bawku enclave. President Mahama plans to inaugurate this committee during the current week to officially launch the fund's operations.

A significant portion of the GHS 1 billion fund will target improvements in the health and road sectors. This includes upgrading existing infrastructure and building new facilities. President Mahama mentioned plans to complete one of the Agenda 111 hospitals in the area. A new hospital will also be constructed in Bawku to strengthen healthcare delivery. These investments are crucial for attracting and retaining skilled professionals.

Improved road networks and bridges are expected to facilitate the movement of traders and farmers. This will help them transport goods and services more easily, boosting local commerce. The government's broader revitalisation efforts, combined with lasting peace, are projected to restore Bawku's economic vitality. This will allow the municipality to reclaim its position as an important commercial centre in Ghana. The fund represents a concrete step towards economic reconstruction and stability in the region. Investors and businesses will closely watch the implementation of these projects. The success of this initiative could set a precedent for other conflict-affected areas in Ghana. The government aims to rebuild confidence and stimulate long-term economic growth in Bawku.
