Drobonso Plants 500 Seedlings for Climate Resilience

Residents of Drobonso in the Ashanti Region planted approximately 500 tree seedlings on World Environment Day. This initiative is a direct response to the growing threat of climate change. The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) led the effort. Miro Forestry supplied the seedlings. The event aimed to restore damaged land.

The tree planting is part of a larger strategy to make communities stronger against climate impacts. Floods and harsh weather are becoming more common in Ghana. Louis Kofi Agbozoh, EPA Konongo Area Head, stated that environmental protection is crucial. He noted that climate change is not a future problem. It is already affecting people across the country. He cited recent floods in Accra as an example.

This year’s World Environment Day focus was on how climate change affects daily life. It encouraged people to work together for the environment. The EPA is working with district assemblies. They want to enforce rules about planting trees. This is particularly for new housing areas. Trees offer protection from strong winds and storms. They also improve air quality.

The EPA plans more environmental awareness campaigns. These will happen in six districts. They will educate people on planting more trees. Critically, they will teach how to care for planted trees. The agency will check on planting sites. This ensures trees survive and grow. The Ghana Landscape Restoration Project has already revived 127 hectares.

Miro Forestry's Environmental Manager, Michael Adjei Ayeh, shared his company’s commitment. Their work on growing trees aligns with World Environment Day goals. Miro Forestry manages about 23,000 hectares of planted forests. They also support local communities. Their partnership with the EPA shows a shared vision. This vision is for a sustainable environment and stronger communities.
