The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) issued spot fines to 13 individuals and businesses on June 8, 2026. These penalties were for breaking rules during the recent National Sanitation Day exercise. The enforcement occurred in Accra's Central Business District.
The offenders included six shop owners, four traders, and three drivers. They were fined for various sanitation violations. Shop owners failed to clean drains in front of their businesses. Some continued operating during the exercise, which was prohibited. Traders were fined for selling goods during the clean-up period. Drivers parked in unauthorised areas.
This action supports the reintroduced National Sanitation Day. The initiative aims to boost environmental cleanliness. It also seeks to improve drainage systems. A key goal is reducing flooding risks in Accra. Accra has long struggled with flooding, often made worse by poor waste management. Data suggests a strong link between clogged drains and urban flooding.
Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, stated the AMA's determination. He spoke during the exercise, despite heavy rain. He highlighted that environmental sanitation is a top priority. Mr. Allotey stressed that clean-up is an ongoing duty. It requires active participation from all residents and businesses. He noted many people are still adapting to the return of National Sanitation Day after a long pause.
Mayor Allotey attributed Accra's flooding issues to human behaviour. This includes dumping waste into drains. It also involves building on waterways. He warned that the AMA would clear all obstructions. This ensures water flows freely. He personally oversaw demolitions of structures blocking waterways before the exercise. Offenders who dump waste in drains face prosecution. Penalties include fines or imprisonment.
To encourage public involvement, the AMA is launching a new scheme. It will offer a GH¢200 reward. This is for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of litterbugs. The Assembly believes this will empower citizens. They can become partners in protecting the city's environment. This initiative helps authorities identify and punish sanitation offenders.
The Mayor also provided an update on infrastructure. Reconstruction of the Rawlings Park road is ongoing. Phase one at CMB is complete. Phase two at Rawlings Park faced delays due to rain. Construction materials are on site. Work will resume when weather improves. Substantial completion is expected by the following week.
