Africa targets GHS 5.7 billion global golf tourism market through new convention

Africa will convene its first-ever Africa Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) from August 18-21, 2026, in Johannesburg, South Africa. This new platform aims to connect African golf destinations directly with international buyers, investors, and tourism decision-makers. The convention marks a coordinated, pan-African effort to structure golf tourism as a key economic segment.

This initiative responds to the fragmented development of golf tourism across Africa, which has historically relied on individual resorts or countries. AGTC will create a permanent business-to-business marketplace to unify stakeholders. Organisers highlight golf tourism as a high-value segment within global travel, leading to longer stays and higher spending. It also offers significant benefits for hospitality, aviation, transport, and destination branding.

The move aligns with Africa's broader push for economic diversification and attracting high-yield tourism. Despite numerous world-class golf courses, Africa remains under-represented in global golf tourism circuits. The continent aims to harness this untapped potential and compete with established markets like Europe and North America. This effort could increase foreign exchange earnings and create new jobs.

Neo Peete, Founder of AGTC, stated Africa's challenge has not been a lack of assets. Instead, he pointed to the absence of a credible platform to aggregate supply and engage the global golf tourism ecosystem. The Gauteng Convention & Events Bureau (GCEB) has endorsed AGTC 2026. GCEB Head Nonnie Kubeka noted the convention's alignment with Gauteng's strategy to grow high-value tourism and business events. Kubeka emphasized the potential for tangible economic returns and employment opportunities in the region.

The convention will take place at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre. It will include a dedicated Golf and Demonstration Day at Serengeti Estates, home to a championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus. This format will combine conference sessions, networking, destination showcases, and experiential golf programming.

This strategic timing follows Gauteng hosting the first-ever LIV Golf tournament on African soil in March 2026. This previous event has already brought global attention to South Africa's golfing credentials. AGTC will build on this momentum, fostering long-term trade and investment relationships beyond single events. The convention expects participation from golf and tourism stakeholders across the continent, covering Southern, East, West, and North Africa.

AGTC positions golf tourism as an economic development tool rather than just a leisure activity. This reflects a wider shift in how African destinations approach tourism. They are now focusing on yield, sustainability, and investment, moving beyond just volume. If successful, AGTC could significantly integrate Africa into global golf tourism flows. This would give the continent a crucial platform it has long needed to leverage its existing assets.
