Parliament urged to allocate funds for flood mitigation after June disaster

Ghanaian Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for specific budgetary allocations to address persistent flooding. His statement on July 1, 2026, in Parliament followed a significant flood event on June 29. The Education Minister emphasized that Members of Parliament must ensure adequate resources are set aside in the upcoming budget cycle.

Mr. Iddrisu highlighted the recent tragedy as proof of Ghana's urgent need for better flood planning and mitigation. He stressed that Parliament must use its oversight role to resource the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources sufficiently. Failure to include such provisions would weaken the national response to future flooding incidents, he warned.

This call for action comes as Ghana continues to grapple with the economic and social fallout from regular flooding. Floods often disrupt key economic activities, damage infrastructure, and displace thousands of citizens. The need for robust flood management systems has become a recurring theme in national discourse, particularly during the rainy seasons. Previous reports indicate that the government released GHS 350 million for flood relief and mitigation after recent floods. However, Mr. Iddrisu implies these responses are insufficient without dedicated budgetary commitments.

Haruna Iddrisu stated, “What the Ghanaian people expect this Parliament to do in November and December is to ensure that, in the allocation of budgetary resources, we make adequate provision to deal with these floods.” He further added, “When in November and December, Parliament passes the budget and you don't make adequate provision for the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, then it means this Parliament is failing.” This direct challenge puts pressure on policymakers to integrate long-term solutions into national financial planning.

The push for specific flood allocations could influence upcoming budget debates and government spending priorities. Investors and financial markets often monitor government initiatives related to infrastructure and disaster management. Such allocations could signal a more stable operating environment. This might lead to increased confidence in sectors vulnerable to climatic events. Decision-makers will closely watch how Parliament responds to ensure Ghana's economic resilience against natural disasters.
