Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, is leading a global appeal to raise $100 million, equivalent to approximately GHS 1.2 billion, for the construction of a new comprehensive cancer centre in Ghana. This significant fundraising drive aims to establish the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence (OOTII CCCoE) at Kwaso, near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The initiative will host a major fundraising gala, "An Evening for Cure," in the United States on Friday, September 4, 2026. This event at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland, seeks to mobilize support from the Ghanaian diaspora, philanthropists, health advocates, and corporate organizations. The goal is to transform cancer care in Ghana and the wider West African region.
Ghana faces a substantial cancer burden, with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reporting an estimated 27,385 new cancer cases and 17,944 cancer deaths in 2022. The proposed centre will address critical challenges such as delayed diagnosis, limited treatment options, and the high cost of care. It will offer comprehensive services including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, research, and palliative care.
Organizers emphasize that the gala is a call to action for global partners to support this vital health infrastructure project. Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, Otumfuo Hiahene and Board Chairman of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, is among the key figures involved. Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Founding Director of the OOTII CCCoE, will also participate.
The first phase of the project is projected to cost $10 million, or GHS 120 million. This initial phase will include essential clinical services, a radiotherapy suite, a research wing, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub, and an education centre. The full development, estimated at $100 million, will be implemented in phases to ensure sustainable progress.
