The Minority group in Parliament is demanding the government disclose the exact prison facility holding Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu. Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu is the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC). This demand follows her recent extradition to Ghana.

The call emerged after Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, stated Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu was in prison custody. Mr. Ofosu confirmed she was serving her sentence under Ghana Prisons Service supervision. Her return to Ghana concluded a lengthy extradition process. This process began after she did not return from a medical trip to the United States.

This situation adds to ongoing discussions about accountability in public office and the enforcement of judicial rulings. Past high-profile cases involving public officials have often faced questions about transparency. Such inquiries aim to ensure no special treatment is given based on political connections. Public trust in state institutions hinges on clear and consistent application of the law.

Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Effia, reacted to the government's stance. He called the information provided inadequate and inconsistent with transparency and accountability principles. Mr. Boamah-Nyarko stated the public deserves full details. These details include where Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu was received upon arrival and her transfer location. He also questioned whether she had begun serving her court-imposed sentence.

“Government communication on Sedina is a very terse one,” Mr. Boamah-Nyarko said. “We are having an accountable democracy where you expect government to provide full details.” He stressed the need for clarity on who received her and confirmation she would serve her full sentence. The lack of specific information fuels public speculation, he added.

Mr. Boamah-Nyarko maintained that merely stating Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu was under prison custody was insufficient. “It is not adequate for a government spokesperson to say that she is in prison custody,” he explained. He noted that individuals can be under prison care while in a hospital or other non-traditional facilities. This point highlights the need for precise details regarding her detention.

The Effia MP said the minority sought definitive information from the Minister for Government Communications. “Exactly what is the status of Sedina in terms of her arrival in Ghana in prison custody?” he asked. They seek to confirm her confinement will adhere strictly to a standard prison environment. This ensures the public perceives full adherence to the judicial process.

Greater transparency would help dispel speculation, according to Mr. Boamah-Nyarko. It would also reassure the public that the court's ruling is being fully enforced. “If they provide us with the exact details, then Ghanaians would have the opportunity to understand that she's in to serve the full term of her conviction.” This would alleviate concerns about potential preferential treatment.

Mr. Boamah-Nyarko also questioned why authorities had not been more forthcoming with information since her extradition. He expects the government to be candid with its people. He reiterated the need for full details of her whereabouts. He noted the case has significant public attention due to its financial implications for MASLOC, which provides loans to small businesses. The conviction involves the misapplication of GHS 4.2 billion, impacting many Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

He stressed the importance of consistent law application regardless of political affiliation. “We expect that the government will come out clearly,” he concluded. The minority remains dissatisfied with the information provided. They expect the government ministry to provide the necessary details. This public demand emphasizes the need for economic transparency and accountability from all state actors.
