President Mahama has activated a GHS 1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund. This significant allocation aims to rebuild the conflict-affected area and restore its economic activity. The President announced the fund's readiness for implementation on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
The fund's activation follows a period of improving security in Bawku and its surrounding areas. This enhanced stability provides the necessary conditions to restart development initiatives. Years of conflict had previously disrupted these crucial projects. The government seeks to restore Bawku's economic relevance as a major commercial hub.
This initiative fits into Ghana's broader strategy for post-conflict recovery and regional economic development. The government aims to ensure equitable distribution of national resources across all regions. Previous conflicts have often stalled economic progress and public service delivery in affected areas. This fund addresses those specific challenges directly.
President Mahama stated, “The allocation for the Bawku Revitalisation Fund has now been made, and it is GHS 1 billion.” He added, “With safety and security prevailing in Bawku and the surrounding areas, this is the time to begin the implementation of the Revitalisation Fund.” This statement underscores the government's commitment to the region's recovery.
The fund will primarily finance infrastructure projects and other necessary interventions. Its benefits should extend to as many districts in the Bawku area as possible. The government's ambition extends beyond physical structures. It seeks to restore Bawku's former glory as a vital commercial centre. The conflict had disrupted essential public services, including the deployment of National Service personnel and medical workers. It also derailed projects like the Tamli Dam. With improved security, the government can now continue unfinished projects. This ensures the people of Bawku receive their fair share of national development.
The decision to activate the fund follows progress made since the Otumfuo Mediation Committee's report. This report was presented on December 16, 2025. President Mahama had used that occasion to call for an end to violence. He also urged resolution of the Bawku dispute through lawful processes. Security services have maintained a firm presence, contributing to the current calm. The President expressed satisfaction with reports of reduced gunshots and abated impunity. He expressed confidence in the newly inaugurated committee's experience and integrity. The committee will oversee the fund's effective management. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson chairs the committee. Members include Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga and Chief of Tempane HRM Cletus Abugri. The Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga also serves on the committee. This broad representation aims to ensure comprehensive and inclusive oversight. The fund represents a significant investment in peace and development for the region.
