The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) has disbursed GHS 353,110 in cash and livelihood support items to 66 persons with disabilities (PWDs). This financial assistance aims to help beneficiaries establish or expand their businesses, promoting economic independence.
Fifty of the beneficiaries, comprising 25 males and 25 females, received direct cash payments. These amounts ranged from GHS 2,000 to GHS 6,000 per individual, totaling GHS 227,347. This capital is intended for use as start-up funds for their chosen business ventures. The remaining 16 beneficiaries, consisting of eight males and eight females, received equipment valued at GHS 125,760. These items included essential tools such as freezers, laptops, refrigerators, overlocking machines, knitting machines, ovens, and an electronic motor, all designed to support various trades.
This initiative forms part of a broader national effort to empower vulnerable groups. The funding originates from the five per cent allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) specifically designated for PWDs. This allocation is a crucial component of Ghana's social protection framework, aiming to integrate PWDs into the mainstream economy and reduce their reliance on external aid. The increased allocation from three to five per cent reflects a growing commitment to inclusive development across Ghana's municipal and district assemblies.
Mr. Alfred Nii Anyetei, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for LaDMA, affirmed the Assembly's dedication to inclusive development. He stated that LaDMA is committed to ensuring that no PWD is excluded from development initiatives within the municipality. The Assembly has established systems to identify eligible beneficiaries and guarantee fair and transparent distribution of funds and items. Ms. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, encouraged beneficiaries to use the assistance judiciously. She highlighted the government's close monitoring of the disbursement process to ensure that only eligible persons receive support.
