Kwakye Ofosu refutes 11 June Presidential Budget claims

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has strongly criticised former presidential legal adviser Kow Essuman. Mr. Ofosu dismissed claims that the budget for presidential staff has significantly increased despite fewer staff. He stated these allegations are based on 'lies and mischief'.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu made this rebuttal in a Facebook post on Thursday, June 11. He said the assertions were inconsistent with the factual remuneration of presidential staff. He explained that the current administration operates under salary and conditions approved by Parliament. These approvals occurred at the end of the previous government’s term.

This dispute contributes to broader discussions about public sector spending and accountability in Ghana. Presidential staff expenditure is a recurring topic in national budgetary debates. Accurate reporting of these figures is critical for public trust and fiscal transparency.

“So on what basis, apart from pure lies and mischief, can a claim of ballooning be made?” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu questioned. He insisted the existing salary structure was inherited from the previous administration. He also said it remains unchanged under the current government.

The minister’s remarks directly addressed Mr. Essuman’s earlier assertion. Mr. Essuman had claimed a significant increase in the Presidency’s staffing budget. This alleged increase occurred despite a reduction in staff numbers. Such claims often spark public concern over government efficiency and financial management.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu provided further details regarding the financial implications. He maintained that once arrears owed to former office holders are settled, the total salary expenditure will be lower. This reduction is due to fewer personnel at the Presidency. The government aims to demonstrate fiscal prudence in managing public funds.

This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny of government expenditure by civil society and opposition figures. Transparency in these financial matters is crucial. It helps maintain public confidence in economic governance. The public and financial markets closely monitor such debates for signs of fiscal stability.

Decision-makers will likely continue to face pressure to provide clear, verifiable data on government spending. Future budget presentations and audited reports will be key. They will offer official figures to clarify the actual financial position. This will enable stakeholders to make informed judgments on public finance management.
