The Ketu North Municipal Assembly has provided livelihood and educational support items to 16 persons with disabilities (PWDs). This initiative aims to enhance their economic independence and educational development within the municipality.
The support, presented by Rev. Martin Amenaki, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu North, used funds from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). Specifically, 5% of the DACF is set aside for persons with disabilities. This allocation ensures targeted assistance for vulnerable groups.
This effort fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to foster inclusive growth and reduce poverty. Government policies increasingly focus on empowering marginalized communities to participate in the formal economy. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service consistently highlights the need for targeted interventions to improve living standards for PWDs.
Rev. Amenaki stated that the initiative is part of government efforts to promote social inclusion. He emphasized empowering vulnerable groups, especially PWDs, to become economically productive. Among the 16 beneficiaries, three received metal containers equipped with knitting machines, radiator repair tools, and barbering equipment. Two others received cassava grating machines, crucial for local food processing. Two beneficiaries also received industrial sewing machines, supporting textile-related livelihoods.
One beneficiary was given a corn mill machine, which the Assembly will install to ensure immediate operational use. The Assembly also provided two specially manufactured motorised tricycles, improving mobility for some individuals. Two laptops with Braille paper were given to persons with visual impairment, enhancing their educational access. Another tricycle was provided to other beneficiaries, further aiding transportation.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MCE, the Assembly, and the government for the support. They noted the items would help them start or expand businesses, achieve financial independence, and contribute to their communities. They also requested ongoing support and monitoring to help overcome business challenges.
