GRA Simplifies Tax Compliance for Businesses with ITAS Rollout

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched its Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) to simplify tax compliance for businesses. The new digital platform aims to reduce compliance costs and improve tax administration efficiency. This vital system will provide taxpayers with a single, integrated view of their tax obligations.

Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong announced these changes at an ITAS stakeholder sensitisation programme on June 5, 2026. This initiative seeks to transform how domestic taxes are managed. The GRA believes ITAS will enhance transparency and taxpayer services. It will also help Ghana meet its ambitious target of GHS 360 billion in annual tax collections by 2028.

Ghana’s economic growth relies heavily on efficient tax collection and administration. The GRA’s move towards a unified digital platform addresses long-standing issues of complexity and fragmentation in tax processes. Previous systems often forced businesses to navigate multiple platforms for different tax obligations. This reform aligns with broader governmental efforts to digitalise public services and improve the ease of doing business in Ghana. The country recorded GHS 147.2 billion in tax collections in 2023, and this new system is central to increasing that figure significantly.

Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong emphasized that ITAS is more than just a technology platform. He stated, “We are building a tax administration system that makes compliance easier, more predictable and more efficient for businesses.” This statement highlights the strategic importance of private sector collaboration for the system's success, as businesses contribute a major share of tax revenue.

The ITAS system officially became operational on April 1, 2026, with a controlled pilot program. The initial phase covered the Accra West Tax Office and the Kaneshie Taxpayer Service Centre. More than 400 taxpayers in the Accra West Area Office have already been integrated into this phased system. The GRA plans to extend ITAS to additional Taxpayer Service Centres across the Greater Accra Region. A nationwide rollout will follow, targeting between 600 and 1000 large taxpayers next. This phased approach allows the GRA to collect feedback and refine the system before full implementation.

One of ITAS's most significant advantages is the consolidation of various tax processes onto a single digital platform. Businesses previously managed separate systems and procedures for different tax requirements. ITAS integrates these, allowing taxpayers to access records, submit returns, and manage compliance from one account. This change is expected to significantly ease administrative burdens for businesses. It also promises better record management.

The system will enable real-time matching of tax filings and payments. This will reduce delays and reconciliation issues that frequently caused disputes between taxpayers and the GRA. Furthermore, ITAS is expected to accelerate tax refund processing. This is particularly beneficial for exporters and businesses needing timely reimbursement of tax credits. Fragmented taxpayer information across multiple systems often caused previous delays. ITAS will consolidate this data, allowing for more efficient verification and quicker processing of claims.

ITAS also integrates domestic tax administration with customs operations. This will create a smoother experience for importers, exporters, and freight forwarders. The platform links to national databases like the Ghana Card and business registration records. This improves data accuracy and reduces duplication of information. Going forward, ITAS will support a data-driven approach to compliance management. The GRA will use risk-based assessments to identify compliance issues. This replaces random audits, benefiting compliant taxpayers by reducing unnecessary interactions and focusing resources where they are most needed. The successful implementation of ITAS will likely boost government revenue and enhance Ghana’s overall fiscal health.
