Dr. Koku Awoonor-Williams, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health, has urged the government to rehabilitate and retool the Nkwanta South Government Hospital. This upgrade aims to improve healthcare delivery and align the facility with international patient care standards.

The hospital's infrastructure has not seen major upgrades or expansion in recent years. This lack of investment affects the quality of care provided to patients. Aging buildings and a shortage of critical medical equipment are making it harder for health professionals to offer modern healthcare services.

This situation impacts public health spending and resource allocation in Ghana. The government continually faces demands to invest in vital social infrastructure, including healthcare facilities nationwide. Improving public health services is a key part of Ghana's economic development goals, affecting workforce productivity and overall well-being. Data from the Ministry of Health often highlights the need for balanced investment across different regions to ensure equitable access to care.

Dr. Awoonor-Williams, who helped transform the former Nkwanta Clinic into a hospital, stressed these needs. He pointed out persistent shortages of essential medical equipment. These include functional theatre equipment, X-ray machines, and other diagnostic tools. He said these items are crucial for better service delivery and to reduce the need for patient referrals to other facilities.

Better healthcare infrastructure in the Oti Region could improve health outcomes and reduce pressure on larger regional hospitals. Decision-makers will need to weigh this urgent call against other competing demands on the national budget. The market for medical supplies and construction services might also see increased activity if the government approves the upgrade. The government's response will indicate its immediate priorities for public health investment.

Additionally, Nkwanta's role as a major transit point for surrounding districts and neighboring Togo makes the hospital's upgrade a strategic necessity. A well-equipped hospital here would serve a wider population beyond its immediate community. This highlights the importance of regional health facilities in a country's overall development plan. Such investment could also boost local employment through construction and increased medical staff.

Dr. Awoonor-Williams made his appeal during a medical outreach program in Nkwanta on Saturday, June 14. He encouraged residents to use their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards for free services offered during the program. He also warned against paying for medical services. Strengthening the hospital's infrastructure and equipment base is essential for residents to access quality healthcare closer to home.
