Ghana's government has released GHS 537 million to cover the tuition fees of 159,750 students under the No Fees Stress Policy for the 2025/2026 academic year. This latest payment brings the total amount disbursed under the policy to GHS 1.3 billion since its introduction.

This significant disbursement aims to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families. It ensures more young people can pursue tertiary education without tuition fee challenges. The policy underscores the government's commitment to improving access to higher learning across the nation.

The No Fees Stress Policy forms a crucial part of Ghana's broader strategy to enhance human capital development. Increased access to tertiary education can boost skilled labor availability, fostering economic growth. This continued investment aligns with government efforts to expand educational opportunities and reduce poverty through empowerment. It builds on previous educational initiatives, reflecting a sustained focus on this sector.

Dr. Saajida Shiraz, Chief Executive Officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), confirmed the disbursement. She stated, "The government of Ghana, since the start of the implementation of the no-academic-fee policy, has given the fund about 1.3 billion Ghana cedis." She further explained that GHS 499 million was received last year, and GHS 537 million this year. These funds have collectively benefited approximately 310,000 students to date. Dr. Shiraz added that the program has also expanded to include students at the Ghana School of Law.

This ongoing financial support is expected to ease pressure on household budgets, freeing up funds for other essential needs. It could also lead to higher enrollment rates in tertiary institutions. Decision-makers and markets will watch for the policy's long-term impact on graduate employment and national productivity. The success of this policy could influence future government spending priorities in social sectors.

For law students, the Student Loan Plus initiative provides additional support. This initiative, part of the No Fees Stress Policy, pays full fees directly to the Ghana School of Law. Dr. Shiraz noted that GHS 14 million has already been deployed for 878 law students. An average sum of GHS 20,000 was allocated per student. This particular intervention supports professional education and ensures financial constraints do not hinder aspiring legal professionals.
