Ghana Floods Spark Disease Outbreak Concerns

Ghana’s Pharmaceutical Society (PSGH) has issued a warning about an increased risk of disease outbreaks. This follows recent severe floods across communities in the Greater Accra, Central, and Volta regions. The PSGH urges residents to follow strict hygiene and sanitation measures.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains, submerged homes, businesses, and major roads. They displaced hundreds of residents and claimed several lives. These conditions create ideal environments for waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhoeal diseases, alongside vector-borne illnesses such as malaria.

This alert underscores broader public health challenges Ghana faces after natural disasters. Flooding frequently disrupts essential services and strains healthcare infrastructure. Past events highlight the need for robust emergency responses to prevent secondary health crises. Data shows an ongoing struggle to manage urban drainage and sanitation, which exacerbates flood impacts.

Pharm. Paul Owusu Donkor, President of the PSGH, signed a statement on June 30. He stressed that pharmacists are committed to supporting affected communities. He assured continued access to essential medicines and pharmaceutical care. The PSGH highlighted that contaminated water, poor sanitation, and overcrowding in temporary shelters contribute to disease spread.

Preventing these outbreaks requires immediate action from individuals, healthcare workers, and local authorities. The PSGH recommends that pharmacists act as frontline healthcare providers. They should offer first aid, counsel residents on disease prevention, and refer seriously ill patients. Pharmacies must also stock essential supplies like oral rehydration salts, disinfectants, and insect repellents. Decision-makers will need to prioritize public health initiatives and resource allocation in flood-affected areas. Markets may see increased demand for specific medical supplies and hygiene products, impacting local economies.
