Ghana Army Launches Three-Week Exercise Starlight Stretch II

The Ghana Army Central Command has commenced ‘Exercise Starlight Stretch II’ with an opening ceremony at Nkwanta in the Oti Region. This training, lasting three weeks, forms the second phase of the Ghana Army’s 2026/2027 Training Year. Soldiers from various units will participate to enhance their operational readiness and tactical skills.

This critical exercise aims to consolidate the achievements from its initial phase while preparing personnel for Ghana's changing security landscape. The training will happen simultaneously in Nkwanta and Bawku. This dual-location approach highlights the Army's dedication to maintaining a professional force capable of addressing diverse security threats.

Ghana faces increasing threats from violent extremism, terrorism, and other internal security challenges. These issues demand constant adaptation and professionalism from military personnel. Such threats also necessitate effective collaboration with other security agencies and relevant civil authorities. The exercise directly responds to these evolving challenges by strengthening response capabilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Naah, the Commanding Officer of 3 Infantry Battalion, underscored the exercise’s importance. He stated it would strengthen participants’ abilities in conventional warfare and internal security operations. He also emphasized improving counter-insurgency tactics and enhancing interoperability among various units and partner security agencies. Lt. Col. Naah urged troops to maintain professionalism, discipline, and commitment, prioritizing safety throughout the training duration. He also called for strict adherence to all exercise directives, safety regulations, and administrative instructions.

The Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Joseph Awal Antwi, welcomed the troops. He expressed confidence in the Ghana Army’s capacity to restore and maintain peace in the area. Mr. Antwi assured the Assembly’s full support for the military during the exercise period. This local government backing highlights the importance of civil-military cooperation in national security efforts.

The successful execution of 'Exercise Starlight Stretch II' will directly impact national security and stability, particularly in regions prone to unrest. Improved military readiness reduces the likelihood of successful extremist activities, safeguarding economic activities and social cohesion. This enhanced capability reassures both local populations and potential investors, contributing to a stable environment for growth. Continuous training similar to this exercise is vital for maintaining a strong defense posture, which is crucial for overall national development.
