The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has distributed GHS106,000 in cash to victims of a recent fire. The fire devastated the Accra Central Police Barracks Trading Area in Tudu. This support offers immediate relief to affected traders and residents.

A total of 106 victims received GHS1,000 each. The presentation ceremony took place at AMA headquarters in Accra on Thursday. This support followed a visit by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey. He assessed the damage and spoke with victims who lost property and goods in the blaze.

Mayor Allotey stated the cash support aims to meet urgent needs during recovery. He acknowledged the amount cannot fully replace lost items. However, he expressed hope for immediate relief. The Mayor conducted his visit on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama. He also represented the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Minister for Local Government. The government conveys its sympathy and assesses ongoing needs. The government remains concerned about the situation. Additional support will be considered after a full assessment report. The Mayor urged honesty in the distribution process. He warned against false claims to ensure limited resources reach genuine victims. Transparency is crucial during crises, he stressed.

Affected individuals unable to attend were advised to work through their leaders. This ensures their details are captured for future assistance. During an earlier visit, the Mayor noted unsafe electrical connections. Hazardous conditions were observed in the area. These practices pose serious safety risks. They can contribute to future fire outbreaks if not addressed. The AMA had previously encouraged traders in similar locations to cooperate. Efforts to reorganise and redevelop trading spaces are important. These measures aim to improve safety standards. They also aim to reduce the risk of recurring disasters.

Addressing urban challenges requires cooperation. This cooperation is needed between authorities and the public. The Mayor stated that national progress depends on citizen responsibility. "The country can only be fixed when citizens cooperate with authorities and conduct themselves responsibly, especially during difficult moments," he said. Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the government's support. They welcomed the intervention. However, they appealed for more assistance. This would help them rebuild their businesses and support families.
