Adaklu Agenda 111 hospital project stalled

The Agenda 111 District Hospital project in Adaklu, located in Ghana's Volta Region, remains stalled despite its critical importance. Donkor Kadey, former Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE) from 2017 to 2021, appealed directly to President Mahama to prioritize its completion in a letter dated June 10, 2026. The Adaklu District does not have a single hospital, forcing residents to travel to neighboring districts for advanced medical care.

This lack of a district hospital forces medical referrals to facilities like the Central Tongu District Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital. This situation often leads to tragic outcomes, with patients sometimes dying during transportation to these distant facilities. The Agenda 111 initiative aims to build 111 hospitals across Ghana to address such healthcare infrastructure deficits. However, the Adaklu project has been left unfinished since its inception.

The stalled Agenda 111 project in Adaklu highlights broader challenges in Ghana's public health infrastructure development. President Akufo-Addo initiated the Agenda 111 program with an estimated cost of GHS 17 billion to construct 111 district hospitals and six regional hospitals. The goal was to ensure every district had a hospital, improving access to quality healthcare nationwide. However, many of these projects have faced delays and funding issues, raising concerns about the government's capacity to deliver on its large-scale infrastructure promises. This particular project's stagnation in Adaklu speaks to the ongoing struggle to complete crucial welfare projects when a new administration takes office.

Donkor Kadey, in his letter to President Mahama, stated, "The Agenda 111 initiative was conceived to bridge healthcare gaps in underserved districts." He added, "The people of Adaklu continue to face systemic barriers, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and operational challenges." Kadey emphasized that a healthy district is a wealthy district, underscoring the link between health and socio-economic progress. His appeal reflects a growing public demand for accountability and completion of critical infrastructure projects.

The completion of the Adaklu Agenda 111 Hospital will significantly impact the district's healthcare landscape. It will reduce preventable deaths by ensuring timely access to urgent medical care within the district. Government decision-makers will need to allocate funds and operational resources to resume construction and equip the facility. The success of this project could also signal the government's commitment to other stalled Agenda 111 sites across the country. Meanwhile, local communities and healthcare advocates will closely monitor the government's response to this urgent call for action. The market for construction services and medical supplies will also see a boost if the project resumes.
