Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) on September 7, 2026, recorded 20.48 million shares changing hands. This activity generated a total value of GHS 139.04 million. MTN Ghana overwhelmingly dominated the session, accounting for more than nine-tenths of the total value traded.

MTN Ghana alone traded 18.47 million shares, valued at GHS 126.32 million. This represented approximately 90.19% of the total market volume and 90.85% of the total value. GCB Bank was a distant second, contributing GHS 10.62 million from 268,492 shares. Together, MTN Ghana and GCB Bank comprised about 98.49% of the day's total trading value.

This extreme concentration of trading activity in just two companies is a recurring theme on the GSE. It suggests that while headline turnover figures may appear robust, the underlying market breadth remains narrow. Such a situation can limit broad-based price discovery and investor confidence across a wider range of listed equities. Deeper capital market development requires liquidity to spread across more companies, not just a few dominant players.

The source material highlights that the GHS 139.04 million headline turnover should not be interpreted as widespread liquidity. Most securities recorded relatively modest activity. This indicates a market where investors might find it challenging to enter or exit positions in smaller stocks without significantly impacting their prices. The reliance on one or two dominant stocks for market activity is a structural issue for the exchange.

For the GSE, the implications are clear: achieving sustainable growth requires fostering broader participation. Policy makers and market operators must focus on initiatives that encourage trading in a wider array of listed companies. This would improve market efficiency and provide investors with greater confidence. Increased liquidity across the board would also make the market more resilient to fluctuations in individual stock performance.

MTN Ghana's stock closed at GHS 6.85, experiencing a marginal decline of GHS 0.01, or 0.15%. GCB Bank, conversely, saw a slight increase, closing at GHS 39.56, up GHS 0.01. Kasapreko PLC was among the more actively traded by volume, with 450,806 shares, but its stock fell by 4.21% to GHS 1.82. CAL Bank advanced 4.17% to GHS 0.75, while SIC Insurance strengthened by 3.23% to GHS 5.43.

Trust Bank Gambia recorded one of the strongest percentage gains, rising 6.67% from GHS 1.20 to GHS 1.28. This occurred on a relatively small volume of 14,031 shares. This demonstrates how thinner counters can experience substantial percentage price movements with limited traded values. Among the larger declines, Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharmaceuticals fell by 9.92% to GHS 1.09. Benso Oil Palm Plantation weakened by 2.18% to GHS 75.00, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated slipped 0.56% to GHS 1.77.

Several other blue-chip names showed limited price movement. Guinness Ghana Breweries remained unchanged at GHS 10.70, and GOIL held steady at GHS 7.45. Unilever Ghana also stayed at GHS 40.00, with Standard Chartered Bank Ghana closing unchanged at GHS 69.89. This lack of movement in major stocks further underscores the concentrated nature of the day's trading.

Activity on the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) also showed similar patterns of concentration. Digicut Production & Advertising led the GAX, trading 784,960 shares worth GHS 293,756.25, but its stock fell by 2.56% to GHS 0.38. Intravenous Infusions traded 129,159 shares and dropped by 7.69% to GHS 0.60. Hords PLC was another notable GAX counter, with 10,586 shares traded, remaining unchanged at GHS 0.83. Several other securities on the alternative market recorded no trades, highlighting the significant liquidity gap between a few active counters and the rest of the board. The NewGold exchange-traded fund recorded 234 units worth GHS 108,199.26, closing unchanged at GHS 462.39. Depositary shares and preference shares were largely inactive, with no recorded turnover in AngloGold Ashanti Depositary Shares or Standard Chartered Bank preference shares during the session. This overall picture reinforces the need for strategies to broaden market participation and liquidity across the entire Ghanaian stock market ecosystem.
