Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) reached GHS 29.51 million on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. This significant turnover was overwhelmingly driven by MTN Ghana, which accounted for 93.06% of the total traded value.

Investors exchanged 4.55 million shares during the session. MTN Ghana alone recorded 3.91 million shares, valued at GHS 27.46 million. This represented 85.92% of the total market volume. The telecommunications company's share price closed marginally lower at GHS 7.02, a 0.14% decline from its previous GHS 7.03 VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price).

This high concentration in MTN Ghana means the headline market turnover substantially overstates the actual breadth of activity across the wider exchange. The Ghanaian economy often sees such concentrated trading, reflecting investor confidence in large, established companies. This trend can also indicate limited liquidity or depth in other market segments. The GSE aims to foster a diverse and robust market, but single-stock dominance remains a recurring feature.

Market analysts frequently point to such figures when discussing the Ghana Stock Exchange's development. They suggest that while high turnover is positive, its concentration in one stock raises questions about overall market health. A broader distribution of trading activity would signal a more mature and resilient market. This situation underscores the need for increased participation across various listed equities.

The implications of this concentrated trading are significant for market participants and regulators. Future sessions will reveal whether this liquidity broadens across more counters or if MTN Ghana continues to dominate. Investors will closely watch for signs of diversified activity, which could indicate a healthier and more stable market environment. Decision-makers may consider policies to encourage trading in a wider range of stocks.

Beyond MTN Ghana, activity amounted to only about GHS 2.05 million. Fan Milk recorded 19,200 shares worth GHS 254,016.77, closing unchanged at GHS 13.23. SIC Insurance generated GHS 252,688.99 from 45,247 shares but eased 0.18% to GHS 5.58. Societe Generale Ghana traded 43,507 shares worth GHS 226,055.23 and fell 3.89% to GHS 5.19.

CalBank was also active by volume, with 245,231 shares worth GHS 188,772.71 changing hands, remaining unchanged at GHS 0.77. Standard Chartered Bank Ghana recorded GHS 179,573.10 in value, closing flat at GHS 70.00. GCB Bank traded GHS 156,767.50 and finished unchanged at GHS 42.95. These figures demonstrate that while some trading occurred, it was dwarfed by MTN Ghana's contribution.

Despite the overall concentration, some stocks did show positive movement. Kasapreko rose from GHS 1.90 to GHS 1.94, a 2.11% gain, on 86,130 shares worth GHS 167,538.08. Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharmaceuticals advanced 8.99% from GHS 0.89 to GHS 0.97 on 30,000 shares valued at GHS 29,100.00. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated gained 1.63% to GHS 1.87, and GOIL rose 0.88% to GHS 8.00. These gains indicate pockets of strength outside the dominant trade.

The Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) also experienced a more uniformly positive session. Intravenous Infusions rose 10.00% to GHS 0.55 after 60,036 shares changed hands for GHS 33,019.80. Hords gained 8.45% to GHS 0.77 on 16,659 shares worth GHS 12,827.43. Digicut Production & Advertising climbed 7.14% to GHS 0.15, though turnover remained modest. Combined GAX activity amounted to 79,007 shares worth GHS 46,194.03.

The NewGold exchange-traded fund saw only two units change hands at GHS 462.39 each, producing a turnover of GHS 924.78. No trading was recorded in AngloGold Ashanti Depositary Shares or Standard Chartered preference shares. This highlights the varied activity across different market segments. The key question for subsequent sessions will be whether this liquidity broadens across more counters or whether MTN Ghana continues to account for an unusually large share of activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
