GSE Trading Value Falls 70 Percent to GHS 5.81 Million

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) slowed sharply on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The total value traded fell to GHS 5.81 million from GHS 19.35 million in the previous session. This represents a substantial 69.99% decline in market turnover.

The weaker turnover suggests that the previous session's strong activity was not sustained. Market liquidity returned to more modest levels. Investors exchanged 1,689,558 shares, a 55.92% decline in volume from the previous session's 3,833,274 shares.

This slowdown in trading activity reflects a broader trend of fluctuating investor confidence in the Ghanaian market. While specific stocks show resilience, overall market participation can be inconsistent. The Ghanaian economy faces ongoing challenges, including inflation and currency depreciation, which can impact investor sentiment on the local bourse.

MTN Ghana (MTNGH) was the dominant stock by value traded, accounting for GHS 1.98 million. This represented 34.17% of the total market turnover. The telecoms stock traded 291,825 shares and gained GHS 0.11 to close at GHS 6.80, a 1.64% rise. MTNGH reached its year high of GHS 6.80, cushioning the broader market from further declines.

Kasapreko PLC (KASA) led the market by volume, with 693,864 shares traded. This represented 41.07% of total market volume. However, the stock declined by GHS 0.07 to close at GHS 2.06, a 3.29% loss. KASA still recorded the second-highest value traded at GHS 1.43 million, equivalent to 24.68% of total turnover. The contrast between KASA’s strong volume and weaker price performance points to active repositioning by investors.

ZEN Petroleum Holdings PLC was the day’s steepest loser, falling by GHS 1.00 to close at GHS 10.00. This represented a 9.09% decline from its previous close of GHS 11.00. Although trading activity in ZEN Petroleum was modest, with 854 shares valued at GHS 8,632.00, its significant price drop contributed to the mixed market tone.

Together, MTNGH and KASA accounted for GHS 3.42 million, or 58.85% of total market value traded. This concentration highlights that market activity was heavily reliant on a few key counters. The top five stocks by value—MTNGH, KASA, Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC (GGBL), Clydestone Ghana PLC (CLYD), and GCB Bank PLC (GCB)—accounted for GHS 4.79 million, representing 82.47% of total turnover. This reinforces the narrow nature of trading activity.

Market breadth was mixed but slightly positive in terms of advancers. Four equities recorded price gains, while three declined. Hords PLC led gainers, rising by GHS 0.03 to GHS 0.22, a gain of 15.79%. Intravenous Infusions PLC followed with a 10.00% increase, closing at GHS 0.55. These selective gains suggest that investor appetite remains for specific growth stories despite the overall market slowdown.

The significant drop in trading value indicates a cautious approach from investors. This trend could persist in the short term, impacting overall market liquidity. Decision-makers will closely monitor these movements for signs of broader economic stability or continued volatility. The performance of key stocks like MTNGH will remain crucial in shaping market sentiment.
