GSE Composite Index Surges 73% as Fixed-Income Trading Hits GHS 281 Billion

Ghana's capital markets are experiencing a significant resurgence. The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Composite Index has climbed 73.00% this year, offering strong returns for investors. Fixed-income trading has also reached GHS 281 billion by mid-August, already surpassing the GHS 245 billion recorded for the entire previous year.

This impressive performance signals renewed momentum in Ghana's financial landscape. Abena Amoah, Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, highlighted these figures at Bayport Savings and Loans PLC’s “Facts Behind the Figures” event. The substantial gains in both equities and fixed income demonstrate improving investor confidence and market liquidity. These developments provide a crucial counterpoint to ongoing concerns about the cost of capital for businesses in Ghana.

The current market rally fits into Ghana's broader economic narrative of recovery and stabilization. After facing significant economic headwinds, including high inflation and debt restructuring, these capital market gains indicate a potential turning point. Strong equity returns can attract more investment and encourage companies to seek public listings. Increased fixed-income activity also points to deeper financial intermediation, crucial for economic growth. This positive trend contrasts with earlier periods of market stagnation and limited investor participation.

Ms. Amoah emphasized the attractive returns available to investors. She stated, “The Composite Index, which we thought would join soon, is up 73% so far this year.” She also noted the significant volume in the fixed-income market. “On the fixed income market, as at August 18th, volume traded so far this year is 281 billion.” These remarks underscore the market's current strength and potential for further growth.

Looking ahead, market participants will watch for sustained corporate engagement. The GSE aims to deepen the market by encouraging more corporate bonds and equity listings. A deeper corporate bond market would offer businesses diverse funding options beyond traditional bank loans. It would also broaden investment choices for pension funds and other institutional investors. The current market strength provides a favourable window for new companies to consider public offerings.

The GSE's ambition for more corporate participation remains a key focus. While government securities still dominate the fixed-income market, the exchange seeks to increase corporate debt's share. Ms. Amoah expressed a desire to move from less than 5% of corporate securities traded to a more aggressive medium-term target. This shift would provide more financing avenues for Ghanaian businesses and diversify investment opportunities for the public. Bayport's consistent use of the debt market, raising approximately GHS 750 million, serves as a positive example for other companies.

The recent three Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in six months, though short of the GSE's target of six, still indicate renewed interest in primary equities. This activity is vital for expanding the number of listed companies and increasing market depth. A vibrant primary market allows businesses to raise long-term capital directly from investors. This reduces reliance on bank financing and supports business expansion. The GSE continues to advocate for more companies to tap into the public markets, leveraging the current positive sentiment.

The robust performance of both equity and fixed-income markets suggests growing confidence among domestic and international investors. This momentum is critical for Ghana's economic development, providing essential capital for businesses to expand and create jobs. The challenge now lies in translating this market activity into broader economic benefits. This includes attracting more companies to list and ensuring diverse investment products are available. The GSE's efforts to deepen the market are central to achieving these long-term goals.
