Ghana Stock Exchange Trades GHS 5.26 Million as Key Stocks Lead Gains

Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed on August 14, 2026, with a total value of GHS 5.26 million. This activity saw Unilever, Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharma, and Clydestone lead price gains, even as market liquidity remained concentrated in a few major companies.

A total of 2.04 million shares changed hands across the market during the session. Ordinary shares represented 1.31 million of these shares, valued at GHS 4.86 million. The trading day highlighted a market where significant price appreciation occurred across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, and the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX).

This market behavior reflects a common trend on the GSE, where a small number of established companies often drive overall turnover. While headline figures can appear robust, much of the activity frequently originates from just two or three major counters. This concentration can mask underlying liquidity challenges for smaller, yet growing, companies.

Norvan Reports indicated that MTN Ghana remained the largest contributor to turnover. The telecommunications giant recorded 196,652 shares worth GHS 1.39 million, representing 26.35% of the total market value traded. This performance underscores MTN Ghana’s critical role in daily market liquidity, even as its share price saw a marginal decline.

The market's structure suggests that investors are actively seeking value across different segments. However, the impact of significant percentage gains from smaller stocks on overall market depth remains limited. Decision-makers will continue to monitor liquidity distribution and its implications for broader market development. Future policy considerations may focus on enhancing participation across a wider range of listed entities.

MTN Ghana's share price slipped by 0.14% from GHS 7.05 to GHS 7.04 despite its high trading volume. GOIL emerged as the second-largest counter by value, with 143,988 shares worth GHS 1.14 million. This represented approximately 21.72% of the total turnover, with its share price holding steady at GHS 7.93.

Together, MTN Ghana and GOIL generated about 48.06% of the entire session’s value. This demonstrates the persistent concentration of liquidity within a relatively small group of highly traded securities. Such concentration means that overall market turnover can appear substantial, even when activity is driven by only a few dominant players.

CAL Bank was the most actively traded stock by volume, with 538,525 shares changing hands. These shares were valued at GHS 421,446.42, reflecting the bank’s lower unit price. CAL Bank’s stock closed at GHS 0.78, a 1.27% decline from GHS 0.79.

Hords also contributed significantly to volume, with 499,628 shares traded for GHS 296,755.86. This represented 24.54% of total shares traded, and the stock gained 8.33%, rising from GHS 0.60 to GHS 0.65. Intravenous Infusions added 6.98% to close at GHS 0.46 after 216,943 shares were traded.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharma saw a 9.46% increase, moving from GHS 0.74 to GHS 0.81 on 33,070 shares. These shares were valued at GHS 26,786.70. Clydestone gained 8.70% to GHS 6.50, despite trading only 1,425 shares worth GHS 8,989.50. Unilever Ghana also delivered a strong advance, gaining 8.47% from GHS 29.50 to GHS 32.00, with 774 shares traded for GHS 24,430.50.

SIC Insurance climbed 5.27% to GHS 5.59 on turnover of GHS 182,114.82. Kasapreko advanced 4.71% to GHS 2.00 after 164,651 shares worth GHS 328,894.73 traded. These gains, particularly from smaller volume stocks, highlight the importance of distinguishing between percentage increases and their overall market impact.

The distribution of turnover provides further insight into investor activity. After MTN Ghana and GOIL, CAL Bank accounted for 8.02% of market value. Kasapreko contributed 6.26%, Hords 5.64%, Ecobank Transnational 4.65%, and Enterprise Group 3.95%. Ordinary shares comprised approximately 92.38% of the GHS 5.26 million traded, with ETFs and GAX-listed securities contributing a smaller share.
