Russia Launches Major Missile Attack on Kyiv Killing One

Russia launched a major ballistic missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, killing one person and wounding at least 14 others. This overnight assault involved a variety of Russian weapons systems, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, alongside 125 drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it "one of the most massive ballistic attacks on Kyiv" since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Ukrainian air defenses successfully shot down 18 out of 41 missiles and intercepted 108 drones during the attack. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported damage to both residential and non-residential buildings, including a supermarket and a dormitory. Firefighters battled blazes at two warehouses, highlighting the widespread impact of the strikes across the region.

This latest wave of attacks follows Ukraine's continued assaults on Russian sites, including drone strikes on industrial parks. The governor of the south-western Stavropol region confirmed a drone attack caused a fire in an industrial park. Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russia's critical energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Moscow's ability to finance the ongoing conflict.

President Zelensky stated that Russia has used approximately 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine in the past week. These figures underscore the intensity and frequency of the conflict's aerial dimension. Ukraine views Russian oil and gas facilities as legitimate targets, arguing that fossil fuel exports heavily finance Moscow's invasion.

The overnight strikes on Kyiv occurred after Ukraine sent drones to destroy two warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer. These Ukrainian operations resulted in eight deaths and significant fires. Seven deaths and 25 injuries occurred at a facility in Tambov, approximately 475km south-east of Moscow. Another Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, near the capital, saw one death and 37 injuries.

President Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine's operations were a direct response to "Russian strikes on our civilian infrastructure and on our cities and communities." This tit-for-tat escalation indicates a broadening scope of targets and an intensifying conflict. The RWB group, which includes Wildberries, was valued at about $12.6 billion by Forbes Russia in 2026, highlighting the economic impact of these attacks.

Earlier this month, Kyiv claimed that nearly 43% of Russia's oil refining capacity had been disabled due to Ukrainian attacks. While the BBC has not independently verified this figure, it suggests a significant strategic effort by Ukraine to cripple Russia's war economy. The ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure have caused widespread fuel shortages in Russia, further impacting its domestic economy.

The continued use of advanced ballistic missiles and drones by Russia against Ukrainian cities signals a persistent and aggressive military strategy. Observers will closely watch for further retaliatory actions from both sides. The international community remains concerned about the humanitarian impact and the potential for further escalation in the conflict.
