Morocco's economy achieved significant growth of 4.9% in 2025, with similar or higher growth projected for 2026. King Mohammed VI announced this robust economic performance during a speech marking the 27th anniversary of his accession to the Throne. This growth signals the start of a new development cycle focused on economic expansion, social advancement, and stronger national sovereignty.
The economic surge was largely driven by strong performance across key sectors, including industry, tourism, and agriculture. Improved rainfall and a robust agricultural season significantly contributed to water and food security. Morocco's political stability and security were highlighted as crucial assets enabling the country to implement major projects and effectively respond to challenges, such as natural disasters.
This economic trajectory positions Morocco as an increasingly attractive destination for investors, aligning with broader trends of industrial diversification in North Africa. The country's long-term vision, built on initiative, accountability, and continuous public action, has been instrumental in achieving these milestones. Morocco's ability to host major international events and manage crises further underscores its growing regional influence.
King Mohammed VI emphasized that Morocco has become Africa’s leading automobile exporter, producing nearly 1 million vehicles annually. He stated that the automotive and aeronautics sectors now account for over 40% of national exports, surpassing the traditional phosphate sector. This shift reflects a strategic move towards high-value manufacturing.
The development of aircraft engine and landing-system manufacturing facilities further solidifies Morocco's ambition to become a major industrial hub. The creation of an integrated electric battery industry demonstrates Morocco's foresight in anticipating global technological changes and participating in strategic value chains. Renewable energy also plays a critical role, strengthening energy security and attracting industries seeking cleaner power sources, with significant investment projects approved under the “Morocco Green Hydrogen Offer.”
On industrial independence, the King noted that Morocco's agri-food and pharmaceutical sectors now meet nearly 80% of domestic needs. Growing capacity in defence and cybersecurity industries is also creating new opportunities and strengthening the country’s regional position. These advancements are part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on external supply chains and enhance national sovereignty.
The tourism sector also recorded a historic performance in 2025, welcoming nearly 20 million visitors, including Moroccans living abroad. This influx of tourists significantly boosts the national economy. However, King Mohammed VI stressed that economic progress must translate into improved living standards and greater social and territorial equality across all regions.
Morocco remains committed to expanding social protection and implementing development programmes to reduce inequalities. The King called on banks and financial institutions to increase their support for investment, major projects, and small and medium-sized enterprises. Greater access to financing, particularly for innovation, industrialisation, and exports, is critical for sustaining this economic transformation.
Internationally, Morocco has strengthened its position as a credible and influential global partner, engaging with confidence in balanced and forward-looking cooperation. The King expressed hope that upcoming legislative elections and the formation of a new government will usher in a new phase of development, building on existing achievements and continuing reforms.
