The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) will launch a major beach clean-up campaign across selected beaches in Accra and nearby coastal communities. This initiative, named “The Blue Ghana Initiative: Protecting Our Beaches, Preserving Our Future,” addresses severe environmental damage and poor waste disposal, particularly after recent floods.
The campaign comes in the wake of heavy rainfall on June 29, 2026, which caused significant flooding in Accra. Areas such as Alajo, Circle, Kaneshie, Odawna, Tse Addo, and Weija were severely affected. The floods resulted in loss of life, destruction of homes and property, and displaced many residents.
Poor waste management heavily contributed to the devastation. Refuse dumped into drains often blocks the natural flow of water, worsening floods in low-lying areas. Environmental experts warn that floodwaters wash much of this waste into rivers and eventually to the coast, polluting beaches and threatening marine life. This cycle highlights a critical economic and public health challenge for Ghana.
Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, GTA’s Chief Executive Officer, stressed the importance of the campaign. She stated, “Our beaches are not just tourist attractions. They are the face we show the world and an inheritance we owe future generations.” Mrs. Houadjeto emphasized that the problem of waste begins long before it reaches the coastline, urging all Ghanaians to take responsibility for environmental protection. She highlighted that cleaning and maintaining beaches is a national duty.
The Blue Ghana Initiative seeks to inspire long-term behavioral change among citizens, businesses, and institutions. The GTA is urging manufacturers of bottled water and other plastic-packaged products to actively reduce pollution. This includes participating in clean-up exercises, investing in recycling, and supporting public education. Such efforts are crucial for Ghana’s tourism sector, which relies heavily on pristine natural attractions.
To ensure the campaign's sustainability, the GTA plans to establish The Blue Ghana Foundation. This foundation will serve as a platform for individuals, corporate bodies, development partners, and philanthropists to contribute resources. Funds will support beach cleaning, environmental education, and conservation work along Ghana's coast. The initiative complements existing sanitation and recovery efforts by local authorities.
The GTA will collaborate with various groups, including community organisations, schools, youth groups, and hospitality operators. This broad partnership aims to ensure the campaign has wide national reach and impact. Details regarding specific beaches and dates for the clean-up exercises will be announced soon. This initiative reflects the GTA's vision to link tourism development directly with environmental protection, ensuring a sustainable future for Ghana.
