Some forex bureaux have quoted the US dollar around GHS12. Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama told capital-market stakeholders on the Ghana Stock Exchange floor that recent foreign-exchange moves are under control, and that “sometimes it’s deliberate policy to allow the cedi to depreciate a little bit.”
MyJoyOnline reported on 18 September 2026 that retail bureaux had seen the dollar near GHS12, while the Bank of Ghana was selling at about GHS11.59 as of Thursday 17 September. NorvanReports cited BoG official data showing a weighted median of GHS11.5200 per US dollar on 17 September, with bank buying at GHS11.5142 and selling at GHS11.5258. On the BoG website, the USD mid rate for 18 September was GHS11.5500 (buying GHS11.5442, selling GHS11.5558).
Pressure has been linked to higher import-related dollar demand ahead of Christmas and tighter near-term interbank supply. Joy Business on 15 September said the interbank rate was about GHS11.46 to the dollar, with bureaux starting the week near GHS11.95, and year-to-date depreciation against the dollar at about 8.77%.
The gap between retail quotes near GHS12 and lower official or interbank levels matters for importers. A weaker retail rate raises the cedi cost of goods paid for in dollars and can feed through to consumer prices if firms pass on higher replacement costs.
