Youth activist Antonio Edem Asinyo has urged young Ghanaians to prepare themselves for available opportunities. He stated that ambition alone is not enough to turn aspirations into success for the nation's youth.
Mr. Asinyo made these remarks during a statement marking International Youth Day 2026. He highlighted a critical gap between the high ambitions of young people and their readiness to seize opportunities. This readiness involves acquiring practical skills, building professional networks, and embracing new technologies.
This call comes as Ghana faces ongoing challenges in youth employment and economic integration. The nation's economic growth, while positive, has not always translated into sufficient job creation for its rapidly growing youth population. Government initiatives in skills development and entrepreneurship aim to address this, but individual preparation remains crucial for their effectiveness. For instance, the Cedi depreciated by 3.1% against the dollar in July 2026, increasing its year-to-date loss to 10.4%, impacting economic stability and the cost of living for many young Ghanaians.
“Our young people do not lack ambition. What we must continue to close is the gap between ambition and opportunity,” Mr. Asinyo stated. He emphasized that opportunities become meaningful only when young people are adequately prepared to utilize them. This preparation includes taking internships seriously and engaging in continuous learning.
