Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, the Member of Parliament for the Wa East Constituency, has provided 300 free reading glasses and organised comprehensive eye screenings for teachers and nurses in his area. This initiative, valued at thousands of Ghana cedis, directly supports the vision and overall well-being of these critical public sector workers.

The three-day exercise, which concluded on June 19, sought to directly improve the eye health of essential professionals. It began in Funsi on June 17, moved to Loggu on June 18, and completed in Bulenga on June 19. The programme targets hundreds of teachers and nurses, enabling them to effectively teach students and care for patients without visual impediments.

This intervention aligns with broader efforts to enhance public service delivery and human capital development in rural Ghana. The government continually stresses the importance of a healthy and productive workforce for national development. Initiatives like Dr. Jasaw's complement national health policies aimed at extending basic healthcare services, particularly in underserved regions. The Wa East District, like many rural areas, faces challenges in accessing specialised healthcare, making such localised programmes vital.

Dr. Benjamin Aminyuure, the Wa East District Director of Health Services, praised the MP's effort. He noted the initiative would address significant eye-related challenges faced by local workers. Dr. Aminyuure emphasised that good vision is crucial for nearly all professional tasks, stating, "As teachers, without your eyes, how do you prepare lesson notes? It will be difficult. The nurses, too, need their eyes to perform most of their duties." He further explained that this intervention will not only promote a healthier population but also significantly boost productivity within the district.

This current initiative follows Dr. Jasaw's recent donation of assorted medical equipment to the Wa East Health Directorate. These prior donations were part of his Health Improvement Project. The MP's ongoing commitment aims to enhance healthcare delivery across the district. Future efforts will likely focus on improving and equipping existing health facilities, many of which are in poor condition. Decision-makers and local communities will observe further steps towards establishing secondary healthcare services in the Wa East District, a critical need identified by the MP.
