The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has commissioned a demonstrative underground mine. This new facility will give students practical exposure to underground mining operations and strengthen skills development.
Constructed within the basement of the university’s administration block, the facility will serve as a practical training and research space. It targets students and professionals in mining-related disciplines. The initiative began with Professor Richard Amankwah, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of UMaT. He identified the potential of the largely unused basement space for this purpose.
This development is crucial for Ghana's economy, where mining contributes significantly to national revenue and employment. The country is a major gold producer, and skilled personnel are vital for the sector's sustainability and growth. This investment in education directly supports the industry's future workforce and technological advancement.
Professor Amankwah explained that the basement was originally for material storage. It was converted into a demonstrational mine to create opportunities for hands-on training. The facility allows students to experience underground mine features without leaving the campus. This direct experience is invaluable for their education.
For Geomatic Engineering students, the facility offers a chance to undertake underground surveying. They can take points for mine planning and understand how underground locations relate to surface points. Mining students will gain practical exposure to underground mine structures, including stopes and handling blasted material. This practical learning environment is a significant upgrade from purely theoretical instruction.
Joseph Frimpong, the Chief Mine Inspector of the Minerals Commission, described the facility as a significant investment. He emphasized its role in the future of Ghana’s mining industry. Mr. Frimpong stated the demonstration mine would act as a “living laboratory.” It will enable students to gain hands-on experience and bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical mining.
The Minerals Commission official also identified the facility as a potential hub for research and innovation. Students and researchers can develop solutions to emerging challenges in the mining sector. He urged students to view their education as an opportunity to contribute to national development. The skills acquired should help build industries that uplift communities, protect the environment, and strengthen the country.
Mr. Frimpong called on UMaT to use the facility to support Ghana’s ambition of becoming a leader in sustainable mining. This includes producing engineers who are globally competitive and committed to national development. The commissioning forms part of UMaT’s ongoing efforts.
