The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has forcefully condemned the physical attack on a midwife. The assault happened at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema. This incident is seen as an unacceptable attack on a healthcare worker. The midwife was carrying out her official duties.
The alleged attack took place on June 2, 2026. It involved a relative of a patient. This person reportedly attacked and handled the midwife roughly. She was enforcing the clinic's rules on visiting hours. A video of the incident circulated on social media. This has brought renewed attention to the safety of healthcare workers nationwide.
The GHS statement came from the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate. They called the attack unprovoked. It represents a disturbing act of violence. A frontline health worker was targeted. This worker was dedicated to patient care. The statement read, "The staff member, a midwife, was attacked by a patient's family member while enforcing the facility's visiting hours policy. The attack was unprovoked." The Directorate expressed solidarity with the victim. They also stand with all health workers in the region. No medical professional should face intimidation or harm.
The Ghana Health Service confirmed arrests were made. The police quickly intervened. This helped calm the situation at the polyclinic. An arrest was made of the person accused of the assault. The statement noted the suspect is expected in court on June 8, 2026. This assault occurs as health sector groups demand better security. They want safer hospitals and clinics. The Ministry of Health has also taken notice. A six-member delegation visited the assaulted midwife. Minister of Health Kwabena Akandoh instructed the visit. The delegation conveyed the ministry's concern. They reassured the victim of government support.
The Regional Health Directorate reminded the public about complaint channels. Concerns about healthcare should use established methods. Confrontational behaviour is not the answer. Client Service Desks exist in all health facilities. These are the correct places for grievances. The desks handle complaints and escalate issues. This is according to the Directorate's statement. "Per the directive of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, all grievances must be channelled to the Client Service Desk, which is present in every Ghana Health Service facility," it explained.
Health sector watchers point out the vulnerability of staff. Healthcare workers face demanding conditions daily. They serve many patients. Medical professionals warn that such violence harms morale. It can also disrupt patient care. The Community 22 incident fuels calls for stronger laws. These laws should protect healthcare workers. More security presence at facilities is also sought. Public education on patient-worker relations is important.
Despite this incident, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate restated its commitment. They aim to provide quality healthcare. They asked for dignity and respect for healthcare staff. Hospitals and clinics must be safe places. "Violence against health workers will not be tolerated," the statement stressed. They urged public support for maintaining peace. Professionalism within healthcare facilities is key. This assault is a major talking point this year. It will influence discussions on workplace protection in Ghana's health sector.
