The Private Sector and Innovation Promotion (PSInno) project has launched in Tamale, Ghana. This initiative aims to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and create new jobs in northern Ghana. The project expects to generate about 2,000 jobs and support 60 innovations by 2028.

This joint effort between Ghana and Germany will directly support more than 1,100 women-led and youth-led businesses. These businesses operate mainly in agribusiness and the digital economy sectors. The project intends to transform northern Ghana into a hub for innovation and economic opportunity.

This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to boost private sector growth. Government efforts include promoting commercial contract farming and agro-processing. Such projects help diversify the economy and reduce reliance on traditional sectors. Data from the first quarter of 2026 shows Ghana's economy grew by 6.4%, driven by services and mining expansion. This GHS 4.2 billion project, for example, contributes to sustained economic progress.

A representative from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) stated the project supports government efforts. He said the government aims to strengthen the private sector and accelerate economic growth. German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Linaschoff, called the project a reflection of the long-standing partnership between Ghana and Germany. This partnership focuses on sustainable development, innovation, and economic resilience.

The PSInno project will be implemented by the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC). It will work with MoTAI, the German development agency GIZ, and other development partners. Decision-makers and local communities will watch the project's progress closely. Its success could encourage similar investments in other regions, strengthening Ghana's overall economic landscape. The initiative's impact on youth employment and entrepreneurship will be a key indicator of its effectiveness.
