The Ghana Youth Federation (GYF) officially launched its Eastern Regional chapter on August 6, 2026. This significant event brought together 79 youth leaders representing all 33 districts within the region. The launch marks a crucial step in the GYF's efforts to build a unified platform for youth participation in Ghana's national development.
Interim regional executives were formally introduced during the ceremony held at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua. These executives will spearhead the federation’s mobilization activities across the region. This development is part of a broader nationwide strategy by the GYF to establish district and regional structures, integrating youth-led and youth-focused organizations registered with the National Youth Authority (NYA).
This initiative aligns with Ghana's ongoing efforts to foster inclusive governance and leverage its young population for economic growth. Youth unemployment and underemployment remain significant challenges, making coordinated youth engagement vital for policy formulation and implementation. The GYF's structure, working with the NYA, aims to provide a formal channel for youth voices to influence national discourse and development programs.
Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, a representative of the Eastern Regional Minister, addressed the gathering. She urged young people to unite and present a common front to strengthen their influence with government and political actors. Ms. Awatey emphasized that a united youth voice would provide greater leverage to advocate for policies and interventions addressing their concerns effectively.
Sherif Ghali, President of the Ghana Youth Federation, described the launch as a significant milestone. He stated, “We have been waiting for a unified voice for a long time — now we have it. Let us unite and contribute to national development. The success of this Federation takes all of us.” Mr. Ghali also detailed the federation’s mandate and national governance structure, explaining the decision to build regional structures around existing NYA-registered youth organizations.
This approach aims to enhance coordination among existing youth groups rather than creating parallel structures, ensuring efficiency and avoiding duplication of efforts. The GYF operates as a non-profit and non-partisan body, representing youth organizations across Ghana. It collaborates with the National Youth Authority at district, regional, and national levels to advance issues affecting young people.
The participation of 79 youth leaders from all 33 districts signals strong interest in a more coordinated approach to youth representation in the Eastern Region. This level of engagement indicates a desire among young people to actively contribute to their communities and the nation. The next phase of the GYF's plan involves forming District Youth Assemblies across the region’s 33 districts.
Ali Ibraheem, National Coordinator of the Ghana Youth Federation, stated that these district-level structures will pave the way for a Regional Youth Assembly. This assembly will then formally constitute and elect substantive regional leadership. The Eastern Region launch contributes to the GYF's broader efforts to strengthen its national institutional presence, including developing its National Strategic Action Plan and securing representation on youth-related governance structures. The federation consistently advocates for greater youth participation in national processes, including discussions on constitutional reform.
