Ghana Sports Fund Backs Cycling Talent

The Ghana Sports Fund will provide support for young cycling talent across Ghana. This initiative aims to grow the sport and create more chances for young athletes, especially girls. The Fund made this pledge during the 2026 Vida Cycling Programme and Mercy Gbenya Abra Dei-Tutu Memorial Girls Indoor Cycling Team Challenge in Peki.

Simon Appiah Junior, Deputy Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, represented the Fund its CEO, Dr David Kofi Wuaku. He highlighted that many sports, including cycling, get little attention. Yet, these sports have great potential to develop talent and promote healthy living. Mr Appiah Junior noted that the Fund's main job is to help new and often overlooked sports thrive. He praised the event organizers for nurturing young people through sports and encouraging girls to participate.

This support fits into Ghana's broad economic goal of diversifying opportunities. Many young Ghanaians seek pathways for success beyond traditional industries. Investments in sports development can foster discipline and create future employment. The Ghana Sports Fund's efforts align with national strategies that recognize sport as a tool for social and economic progress. Such initiatives can help build a stronger national sports ecosystem. This ecosystem can eventually attract commercial sponsorships and greater public engagement.

Mr Appiah Junior stated that the Ghana Sports Fund is ready to work with event organizers. He wants to help the competition grow and attract more participants in the future. He added that supporting talent at the grassroots level is crucial for Ghana’s long-term sports success. The Fund aims to transform the current cycling initiative in Peki into a larger regional and national event. This would invite wider participation and gain more recognition.

The Fund's promise is a welcome step for participants and organizers. They face challenges like lack of equipment, poor infrastructure, and limited funding. With the Ghana Sports Fund's backing and community support, cycling enthusiasts hope for significant improvements. This support could empower young people and produce future sports champions for Ghana. The Fund's vision extends to using sports to build a stronger future for the nation.
