Students at the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHLTU) showcased their practical skills and entrepreneurial innovations at the 2026 Open Day Exhibition and Mini Trade Fair. This event on Monday transformed classrooms into marketplaces, featuring student-made welding projects, pastry samples, and designer apparel.

The fair highlighted a significant shift towards making technical education central to Ghana's job creation efforts. Government backing for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) aims to equip young people with practical skills. The event demonstrated DHLTU's commitment to industrialisation and entrepreneurship.

This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to enhance youth employment through vocational training. President John Dramani Mahama has prioritised TVET to foster innovation and self-employment among the youth. Emphasising practical skills development is crucial for Ghana's economic growth and industrial transformation.

Upper West Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing firmly stated that the fair proves theoretical knowledge can lead to practical output. “Today marks the sign of all the activities that we do theoretically that are now being exhibited in practical terms,” he said. He encouraged students to embrace technical education for employment and entrepreneurship.

Professor Hamidatu Dramani, the Vice Chancellor, stressed that TVET builds human capital, drives industrialisation, and creates jobs. “Technical and Vocational Education and Training is not just about learning a trade. It is about building human capital that drives industrialisation, creates jobs, and transforms lives,” she explained. This year's theme, “TVET: A Tool for National Development through Industrialisation and Entrepreneurship,” guides the university's direction.

DHLTU's commitment is to produce graduates who think critically, use their hands, and solve practical problems. Director of TVET, Mr. Martin Donani, stated the Open Day highlights DHLTU’s expertise and innovations to prospective students and parents. He noted that many exhibited items were available for sale, and orders could be placed for delivery or pick-up. This direct market engagement bridges the gap between vocational training and commercial success.

The university's growing reputation was reinforced by its researchers winning the Best Research Paper Award in May 2026. This achievement at the Applied Research Conference for Technical Universities in Ghana underscores DHLTU’s dedication to applying knowledge to real-world challenges. This type of recognition further positions DHLTU as a leader in technical education and research.

The Open Day event sends a clear message: the government supports TVET, and DHLTU is producing industry-ready and entrepreneurial graduates. This convergence of policy, education, and market access creates significant opportunities for Ghana’s youth. Their ability to acquire practical skills and create their own jobs is vital for national development. This move could transform many young individuals from job seekers into job creators.
