UPSA Launches New Transport and Logistics Center

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and J.K. Horgle Transport and Company Limited have jointly commissioned the J.K. Horgle Transport and Logistics Center. The new state-of-the-art facility is located on the UPSA campus.

This centre will provide certificate, diploma, and executive programmes. These courses cover essential areas like transport and logistics management, fleet safety, and supply chain management. It will also coordinate internships, industrial field studies, and mentorship programmes for students.

The centre directly responds to Ghana's ongoing need for skilled professionals in its expanding transport and logistics sector. This sector is crucial for economic growth and plays a significant role in moving goods and services across the country. The initiative reflects a broader national effort to connect academic training with industry demands.

Madam Dorcas Affo Toffey, the Deputy Minister for Transport, spoke at the launch. She highlighted the centre's role in connecting academia, industry, and government. She encouraged more private sector partnerships, noting that transport is the backbone of Ghana's economy. The Minister also praised J.K. Horgle Transport Company Limited for its consistent contributions to the sector.

Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, the Vice Chancellor of UPSA, urged students to use the centre's opportunities. He emphasized that the university is offering transport and logistics courses to help students find employment. Dr. Joseph K. Horgle, Founder and Executive Chairman of J.K. Horgle Transport and Company Limited, funded the centre. He dedicated the facility to all drivers and stakeholders in the transport value chain. He also thanked UPSA for naming the centre in his honour. The university plans to ensure staff and students receive training to stay updated on industry trends. The centre will also conduct applied research and offer consultancy services.

The establishment of this centre is expected to significantly enhance the skills available in Ghana's transport and logistics market. This market requires a more skilled workforce to meet the demands of a growing economy and increased trade. Decision-makers and businesses will watch how the centre's programmes impact graduate employment and industry efficiency. It could also influence future policy development in transport and logistics. The focus on green and sustainable logistics also signals a broader commitment to environmentally friendly practices within the industry.
