Two people died and eight others sustained injuries in a road crash at Dompoase, near Komenda, on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway. The incident occurred on Friday evening, August 2, 2026. A Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle, with registration number AS 6145-24, was travelling from Accra towards Takoradi. It veered off the road to avoid a head-on collision with an overtaking vehicle. The Hiace then crashed into a stationary truck, registration number GN 2491-1.
One person died at the scene of the accident. Another victim, trapped in the wreckage, was later pronounced dead after rescue efforts. The remaining eight occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries. Three of these individuals suffered critical injuries. Personnel from the National Ambulance Service transported all injured persons to the Elmina Polyclinic for urgent medical treatment.
This tragic event underscores the severe economic and social costs of road accidents in Ghana. Road crashes place a significant burden on the healthcare system. They also lead to loss of productivity and human capital. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) consistently reports high fatality rates on Ghana's roads. These incidents often involve commercial vehicles, impacting livelihoods and families across the country. The Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway is a major economic corridor. It connects key regions and facilitates trade and transport. Accidents on this route disrupt economic activity and raise concerns about infrastructure safety.
Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu confirmed the incident. He is the Central Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). DO II Hudu stated that the Komenda Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 1855 hours. A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Officers arrived at 1910 hours. They found one person deceased and another trapped, requiring an extrication operation.
The GNFS has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads. They also emphasized the importance of observing all road safety regulations. This includes avoiding reckless overtaking and maintaining appropriate speeds. Adherence to these rules is crucial to prevent avoidable road crashes and fatalities. Decision-makers will continue to monitor road safety statistics. They will also assess the effectiveness of current enforcement measures. The public expects sustained efforts to improve road infrastructure and driver education. This is vital for reducing the frequency and severity of such incidents.
