The second phase of the Suame Interchange project, a vital infrastructure development in Kumasi, will be fully completed and opened to traffic by October 2026. This confirmation comes from James Oduro Amoo-Gottfried, the Director-General of the Department of Urban Roads.
This phase specifically addresses approximately 15 kilometres of local roads within the project's influence area. Its timely completion is crucial for providing alternative routes for motorists and significantly reducing traffic congestion in the Suame area.
The Suame Interchange project is a key component of Ghana's broader infrastructure development agenda. It aims to enhance urban mobility and support economic activities in the Ashanti Region, a major commercial hub. Improved road networks are essential for the efficient movement of goods and people, directly impacting productivity and trade.
Speaking at a stakeholders' engagement in Kumasi, Ing. Amoo-Gottfried stated that work on both phases of the Suame Interchange project is progressing steadily. He explained that Phase Two is nearing completion ahead of Phase One. This strategic sequencing ensures that alternative routes are available for motorists when construction intensifies on the main interchange.
Phase Two includes the construction of three new overpasses. These are located at Anomangye, New Road, and Ebusuakruwa. These overpasses are designed to improve northbound traffic movement within the area and offer additional routes for drivers.
The Director-General also detailed plans for Phase One, which involves the main multi-tier interchange. This includes an overpass from the Suame Roundabout to Abrepo Junction. The road along the Western Bypass will also undergo widening to increase vehicular capacity and ease congestion.
A grade-separated underpass will be constructed at Abrepo Junction, one of the busiest points along the corridor. This underpass will allow traffic from Bantama and the hospital area to pass directly towards Abrepo. Vehicles using the bypass will continue at ground level, separating traffic flows and reducing bottlenecks.
Ing. Amoo-Gottfried also addressed concerns regarding traders and structures within the project's right of way. He clarified that individuals operating in these areas were there temporarily. The Suame Municipal Assembly will engage with them to facilitate their relocation. This engagement is critical to allow construction works to proceed without hindrance and ensure the project stays on schedule.
The successful completion of this project is expected to have a positive impact on local businesses and residents. Reduced travel times and improved road safety will contribute to better living conditions and economic efficiency in Kumasi.
