Roads Ministry Requests 1,000 New Staff Amidst Growing Demands

Ghana's Ministry of Roads and Highways plans to recruit 1,000 new staff members. This action aims to address significant personnel shortages within its agencies. Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza confirmed this request during a parliamentary committee appearance.

The ministry's Chief Director submitted the request due to increased pressure on existing staff. The rapid growth in road sector demands also necessitated this expansion. Key technical departments, including engineers and quality assurance officers, are severely overstretched. This makes effective supervision of road projects across Ghana challenging.

This staffing shortfall comes after the creation of six new administrative regions. These new regions received no corresponding increase in road agency personnel. The existing workforce is insufficient, particularly for ongoing infrastructure projects. Institutional capacity remains weak in these newly established regions. This situation affects the overall quality and monitoring of large-scale road developments.

Minister Agbodza told Parliament's Select Committee on Economy and Development about the critical need. He stated: "The staffing level of the agencies is far less than what it should be. Considering the huge investments being made in road projects, some of the quality assurance challenges arise simply because we do not have enough people to monitor the projects." He explained that insufficient monitoring capacity leads to quality issues in road construction.

The government recently approved the recruitment of 137 staff for the Ghana Highway Authority. These new hires include engineers and quality survey experts. However, Minister Agbodza emphasized this approval covers only a fraction of the ministry's total needs. The additional 1,000 staff are crucial for expanding coverage beyond the Ghana Highway Authority. This expansion will ensure adequate personnel across all road agencies nationwide.

Filling these staffing gaps is essential for several reasons. It will improve project monitoring and strengthen quality assurance processes. Better staffing will also enhance overall service delivery in the road sector. The ministry assures Parliament that it is actively working to resolve these staffing challenges. Strengthening the operational capacity of the ministry and its agencies remains a top priority. Timely recruitment will support Ghana's extensive road network development plans. This will directly impact economic activity and public safety on national roads.
