MPS Tema Port investment praised by Deputy Transport Minister

Ghana’s Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has commended Meridian Port Services (MPS) for its significant investments at the Tema Port container terminal. She described the facility as one of the most modern and well-equipped ports in West Africa. This endorsement followed a working visit where Madam Affo-Toffey toured the terminal and engaged with MPS management.

The investments by MPS are critical for improving Ghana's trade facilitation capabilities. They contribute directly to the government’s ambition of transforming the nation into a competitive logistics and maritime hub. The Minister’s visit aimed to deepen her understanding of MPS’s operational significance and its role in boosting Ghana’s economic prospects.

These private sector investments align with Ghana's broader economic narrative of enhancing infrastructure to support trade and regional competitiveness. Data indicates that efficient port operations are crucial for a nation heavily reliant on imports and exports. Previously, delays and inefficiencies at ports have negatively impacted trade volumes and business costs.

“I am personally impressed with the level of investment that has gone into this facility,” said Madam Affo-Toffey. She added, “The technology, infrastructure, and modern equipment deployed here are truly remarkable.” Her statement underscores the direct benefit of such private sector commitments to public infrastructure goals.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Transport will consider MPS's appeal for government assistance. MPS has requested the protection of available land around the port enclave for future development projects. These projects aim to address congestion and improve operational efficiency at the busy port.

Additional land is crucial for easing challenges related to parking and traffic congestion. It also creates room for future infrastructure that will streamline port activities. Madam Affo-Toffey affirmed she would brief the Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, on these concerns. She stressed the importance of collaboration between government and private-sector operators.

Sustained government support for private investment in critical infrastructure like Tema Port is vital. This support will ensure Ghana continues to meet growing demand while maintaining world-class operational standards. This strategic collaboration is necessary for advancing President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” agenda.

The proactive engagement by the Deputy Minister demonstrates the government's commitment to industry players. This commitment seeks to support investments that enhance Ghana’s maritime competitiveness. Ultimately, such efforts facilitate trade and contribute significantly to overall economic growth.
