    Dangerous structural defects have been identified at the Mallam Interchange in Accra, Ghana. Photographs taken last week show severe concrete spalling, large sections of concrete broken away, and visibly exposed steel reinforcement bars. These alarming issues are concentrated at a beam-column junction, a critical point in the flyover's structure.

    A deep structural crack runs vertically from the damaged beam section down through the supporting column. Structural engineers classify this combination of defects as a serious integrity concern. The damage requires immediate professional assessment and urgent intervention to ensure public safety on this vital transport artery.

    The Mallam Interchange is a dual carriageway flyover and a key part of the George Walker Bush Highway. This 14-kilometre corridor, funded by the United States Millennium Challenge Corporation, was completed in 2012. Maintenance responsibilities shifted from MCC funding to domestic government allocations, managed by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).

    Previous reports have highlighted structural vulnerabilities, including exposed expansion joints and missing nuts. These earlier issues prompted calls for reinforcement and rehabilitation from the GHA and the Ministry of Roads and Highways. The current damage at the beam-column junction represents a significantly more serious condition than previously reported surface-level defects.

    The exposed reinforcement steel visible in the photographs is particularly concerning from an engineering perspective. When the concrete cover protecting the steel is lost, the bars are directly exposed to moisture, carbonation, and Accra's salt-laden coastal air. These conditions rapidly accelerate corrosion, which causes the steel to expand within the concrete. This expansion drives further cracking and spalling, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of deterioration.

    A beam-column junction is one of the most structurally critical and highly stressed points in any bridge or flyover structure. This is where the spanning deck transfers its load to the vertical support column. Damage concentrated at this location is not merely cosmetic; it is fundamentally structural, impacting the entire integrity of the interchange.

    Residents near the interchange have previously raised safety concerns, reporting instances of vehicles falling from the structure. The newly documented structural damage adds a new and more fundamental dimension to these existing worries. The Ghana Highway Authority and the Ministry of Roads and Highways must treat this as an urgent public safety matter, not a routine maintenance schedule item.

    An independent structural engineering assessment of the interchange should be commissioned immediately. The findings of this assessment must be made public, and remediation works undertaken without delay. Every day that passes without intervention increases the risk for thousands of commuters, traders, and motorists who use this visibly compromised structure. Ghana cannot afford to wait for a collapse before it acts on these critical infrastructure deficiencies.
