Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has successfully completed the replacement of weak sections of the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines. This critical maintenance allows water production to resume at the Kpong Treatment Plant. The exercise began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, and concluded on schedule.
The maintenance work focused on the 21-inch (525mm) and 42-inch (1050mm) transmission pipelines. These pipelines are vital for delivering water to communities in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions. The timely completion of these repairs is crucial for public health and economic activity in these areas.
This infrastructure upgrade aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to improve essential services and support economic growth. Reliable water supply is fundamental for industries, businesses, and households. Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, confirmed the completion of the works. He commended the engineers, contractors, and technical teams involved in the project. While production has resumed, GWL advises consumers that the restoration of water supply will be gradual. Transmission lines and reservoirs need refilling, and operating pressures must rebuild. The company expects more consumers to receive water as the system stabilizes, barring unforeseen technical issues.
GWL also cautioned that the resumption of production does not mean an immediate return to continuous water supply across all affected communities. The company's water demand management and rationing programme remains in effect. This ensures the equitable distribution of available water resources.
Consumers in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions are encouraged to continue observing their usual rationing schedules. GWL appealed for patience while the network gradually recharges, reservoirs replenish, and water pressure restores. This phased approach aims to manage the system's recovery effectively.
The successful completion of the exercise demonstrated the value of teamwork and strong coordination. Mr. Mutawakilu specifically acknowledged Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, Lead and Chief Manager of ATMA Production, and Michael Botse Baidoo, General Manager of Operations. Their leadership and their teams' efforts were instrumental.
GWL also thanked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its support during the maintenance. ECG personnel worked through the night alongside GWL teams to facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong. This inter-agency cooperation was vital for the project's success.
The company also extended gratitude to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). Contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams, and other stakeholders also received appreciation for their contributions. GWL is closely monitoring the transmission line as water supply progressively restores.
This proactive maintenance and infrastructure modernization underscore GWL's commitment to improving water supply for consumers. Such investments are critical for Ghana's long-term development goals.
