The Member of Parliament for Jirapa, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, and Municipal Chief Executive, Peter N. N. To-ang, have officially handed over significant education, health, and sanitation projects. These new facilities will serve communities across the Jirapa Municipality, enhancing access to vital public services.
The projects include a newly constructed Junior High School (JHS) block, a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, and a public toilet. Additionally, 970 pieces of school furniture were distributed to basic schools. The St Augustine JHS block alone cost over GHS 1 million, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, highlighting a substantial investment in local infrastructure.
This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to decentralize development and improve social infrastructure in rural areas. Such investments are crucial for human capital development, directly impacting future economic productivity and public health outcomes. The provision of essential services like education and healthcare is a key driver of long-term economic growth and poverty reduction in Ghana.
The Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service, Hudu Kunaateh, described the furniture intervention as timely. He noted the poor conditions in some schools, stating, “Indeed, it’s pathetic. You get to some schools and you see children creeping on their bellies like pythons.” This underscores the critical need for such basic amenities to facilitate effective learning.
These new facilities are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents. The CHPS compound will bring healthcare closer to rural communities, supporting the government's planned Free Primary Health Care policy. The public toilet at Tiza will address long-standing sanitation challenges, though user fees will be charged for its maintenance. Future efforts will likely focus on connecting the CHPS compound to the national electricity grid and ensuring proper maintenance of all new infrastructure.
