Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has stated the government lacks a clear strategy for Accra's flooding. He expressed this criticism on JoyNews’ AM Show. Mr. Aboagye argued that effective leadership requires practical solutions for citizens.
Mr. Aboagye believes governments must protect citizens' welfare and prosperity. He stated that citizens entrust leaders with their resources and rights. They expect direction and national progress in return. When leaders merely lament problems, it becomes a significant issue. The government has not provided a clear roadmap for addressing flood challenges in Accra despite knowing the city's vulnerabilities. He described the situation as hopeless.
This criticism arrives amidst ongoing concerns about urban planning and infrastructure in Ghana's capital. Accra experiences significant economic activity but also faces substantial challenges with drainage and waste management. Flooding events disrupt daily life and cause considerable economic losses. The June 3, 2015, flood and fire disaster, which claimed many lives and caused widespread destruction, remains a stark reminder of the risks. It highlighted critical deficiencies in urban development and disaster preparedness.
Mr. Aboagye pointed out that President John Dramani Mahama previously served as president. This experience should inform current policy. He questioned the impact of interventions made after the June 3, 2015, disaster. A committee was established and promises were made to re-engineer Accra. Mr. Aboagye asked what became of these plans. He also noted that many Ghanaians supported President Mahama’s return believing his past experience would help solve long-standing issues.
The spokesperson further questioned why the government is still identifying flood-prone areas. He suggested such assessments should have been completed already. This is especially true for a president campaigning on experience. Mr. Aboagye urged the government to focus on practical solutions. They should present clear timelines for residents to reach home safely after rainfall. He stressed that state institutions are responsible for urban planning and providing a clear strategy. Measurable actions are needed to address this recurring challenge effectively.
