GMet warns of more rain after Accra floods kill three

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that more rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across southern Ghana. This forecast follows severe flooding that recently claimed three lives and displaced residents in Accra.

GMet issued an impact-based weather update on Tuesday, June 30. A slow-moving rainstorm off the coast of Benin will move westwards. This system will bring increased cloud cover and rainfall to several parts of the country. Expect slight to moderate thunderstorms with rain over the Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central regions from Tuesday morning.

This new warning comes after torrential rains on Monday caused widespread flooding. Three people in Alajo died from electrocution during these floods. The Greater Accra Regional Minister directed local government heads to intensify rescue operations. Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and Electricity Company of Ghana temporarily shut down substations. These were the Mallam and Achimota primary substations, closed as a safety precaution.

GMet cautioned the public to remain alert for hazards associated with the storms. These include fallen trees, loose electrical cables, and damaged utility poles. Reduced visibility on roads is also expected. The agency specifically warned of possible localized flash flooding in affected areas. Motorists should reduce speed and use headlights where necessary. Pedestrians must avoid walking through floodwaters.

The current weather system is expected to extend later in the day. Parts of the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Western North, and Western regions will see rain. This storm will trigger rain-bearing clouds over these areas. Greater Accra, Volta, Central, and Eastern regions have a high probability (greater than 60%) of rainfall. This is expected between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Western, Ashanti, Ahafo, Western North, and Bono regions have a medium to high probability (4060%) of rain and thunderstorms. This is projected between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The Flood Early Warning System for Accra (FEWS-Accra) continuously generates rainfall forecasts. This system provides updates every 10 minutes. Authorities are monitoring weather conditions and coordinating emergency responses. The continuous threat of flooding highlights the ongoing challenges of urban infrastructure in Accra. These challenges become more apparent during intense rainy seasons. Investment in drainage systems and resilient infrastructure remains crucial to protect lives and property. Further disruptions to electricity supply and daily economic activities are possible.
