Ghana recorded a 2.7% increase in passenger arrivals during the first five months of 2026. A total of 515,530 passengers entered the country via its international airport and land borders. This figure is up from 501,961 arrivals during the same period in 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report.

This growth reflects a significant rebound in travel and cross-border movement. The rise in arrivals suggests increased business activity, tourism, and diaspora engagement. These factors are crucial for various sectors of the Ghanaian economy, including hospitality and retail.

The positive trend in passenger arrivals fits into a broader narrative of economic recovery and increased confidence in Ghana. This development follows a period where global travel faced significant disruptions. The Bank of Ghana’s report often provides key indicators of the nation's economic health. Improved travel numbers can boost foreign exchange earnings and support local businesses. This trend also aligns with efforts to promote Ghana as a regional hub for business and tourism.

The Bank of Ghana's July 2026 Monetary Policy Report highlighted these figures. It noted that passenger arrivals improved by 3.7% year-on-year to 112,634 in May 2026 alone. This was an increase from 108,665 arrivals recorded in May 2025. The report also indicated a 12.7% rise in arrivals compared to April 2026, showing strong month-on-month growth.

The continued increase in passenger traffic suggests a sustained recovery in the aviation and tourism sectors. This positive momentum could lead to higher demand for services and goods, stimulating job creation. Policymakers will likely monitor these trends closely for their impact on economic growth targets. Businesses in related industries, such as hotels and transportation, can anticipate continued growth.

Beyond passenger movements, Ghana's international trade also showed robust performance. Total container traffic at the country’s two main harbours, Tema and Takoradi, increased significantly. For the first five months of 2026, cumulative container traffic went up by 12.2%. This reached 394,742 containers, compared with 351,690 for the corresponding period last year.

In May 2026 alone, total container traffic increased by 5.8% year-on-year to 83,621. This was up from 79,059 for the same period in 2025. This growth in container traffic indicates a healthy expansion in both imports and exports. It signals increased trade volumes and economic activity across various sectors. The performance of the ports is a vital barometer for Ghana's engagement with global markets.

The combined growth in passenger arrivals and container traffic paints a positive picture for Ghana's economic outlook. These indicators suggest a strengthening of both the services and trade sectors. This could contribute to overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for the year. The Bank of Ghana will consider these trends when making future monetary policy decisions. Investors and businesses will also view these figures as signs of improving market conditions. The government's focus on infrastructure development, including port expansion and airport upgrades, likely supports these positive trends. Sustained growth in these areas is essential for Ghana's long-term economic stability and prosperity.
