The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched the Burma Camp Redevelopment Project, an initiative delivering 440 modern housing units for military personnel.
This program includes three key components. It involves constructing 192 housing units at El Wak Barracks. It also entails developing 248 housing units at Medo Lines within Burma Camp. Finally, it will redevelop the Burma Camp Post Office into a two-storey multipurpose commercial facility. These efforts aim to improve the welfare and morale of military personnel by providing updated living conditions. The project seeks to address long-standing accommodation deficits within the forces.
This substantial investment by the GAF forms part of Ghana's broader National Security strategy. Modernizing military accommodation is essential for troop retention and readiness, especially as the GAF takes on expanded roles. These roles include maritime security, anti-terrorism preparedness, internal security, and international peacekeeping missions. The project aligns with the government’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda,” which focuses on national development and infrastructure upgrades across various sectors.
Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, emphasized the importance of this project. He stated, “Decent accommodation is critical to improving the welfare, morale and operational readiness of personnel.” He further noted that the military has many officers and soldiers still living in aging facilities. These facilities have outlived their usefulness, despite the personnel’s sacrifices for the country.
This initiative represents a significant commitment to the GAF’s infrastructure. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has granted tax-deductible status for eligible contributions. This encourages private sector participation in funding the project. The engagement of companies like Belamos Construction Limited and HMS Construction Limited indicates an acceleration of the construction phase. The El Wak Barracks project alone is expected to finish within nine months, replacing 18 dilapidated blocks with 192 modern units.
The redevelopment of the Burma Camp Post Office into a commercial facility will diversify the project's utility. The ground floor will house two banking halls. The first floor will accommodate the post office, a conference room, and a travel and tour office. This multipurpose design will provide essential services and potentially generate revenue for maintenance. The Medo Lines project will replace 18 existing accommodation blocks with 248 family units, a 600 per cent increase in housing capacity. This improvement in housing capacity reflects a strong commitment to addressing the military’s accommodation needs. The successful completion of these works will directly impact thousands of military families. This will also enhance the GAF's operational efficiency and readiness.
