The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project will commence construction of a 10-metre-wide underground stormwater drain in Kaneshie. This significant infrastructure undertaking begins on September 7, 2026. The project aims to bolster flood control measures within the national capital, addressing long-standing vulnerabilities to heavy rainfall.
This initiative directly responds to the severe June 29 flood disaster. That event impacted parts of Accra and three other regions. It tragically resulted in 39 fatalities and affected 91,989 individuals. The disaster reignited urgent concerns regarding Ghana's existing drainage infrastructure and its capacity to manage intense weather events.
Ghana's economic stability and urban development are frequently challenged by seasonal flooding. Accra, as the economic hub, experiences significant disruption to commerce and daily life during these periods. Improved drainage infrastructure is crucial for protecting property, livelihoods, and public health. Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, the GARID Project Coordinator, confirmed the project details. Speaking on the Government Accountability Series, he stated that the new commitment tackles the flood menace in the capital. He emphasized the necessity of replacing the area's current inadequate drainage system. This new drain represents a substantial upgrade to the region's flood management capabilities.
The construction will span a 1.5-kilometre stretch. It extends from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction along the Dr. Busia Highway. This new facility will replace two existing pipes, each measuring approximately 1.2 metres in diameter. These older pipes have proven insufficient for the area's stormwater management needs. The new, much wider drain will significantly increase water flow capacity.
One end of the new drainage system will connect to a recently completed section within the Accra Academy campus. The other end will link to the existing drain at Pamprom Junction. This strategic connection ensures a comprehensive and integrated approach to stormwater diversion. It aims to reduce pressure on the entire Kaneshie drainage network during heavy rainfall.
Dr. Ohene Sarfo indicated that the work will proceed in three distinct phases. This phased approach is necessary due to the project's scale and its critical location within a busy urban area. Consequently, temporary road closures and diversions along sections of the Dr. Busia Highway will be unavoidable. Authorities will advise motorists and other road users to seek alternative routes.
The successful completion of this project holds significant implications for Accra's future resilience. It is expected to mitigate the economic losses and social disruption caused by floods.
