Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will launch four weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and Accra starting March 17, 2027. This move marks a significant expansion of the airline's presence in Africa, connecting Ghana to its extensive global network.
The new route will utilize a Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner aircraft. It will offer passengers seamless one-stop connections through Abu Dhabi to more than 120 destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and North America. This development is expected to enhance business and tourism links between Ghana, the UAE, and other international destinations.
This strategic decision aligns with Ghana's growing importance as an economic hub in West Africa. The country's increasing demand for premium air travel and strong business and diaspora links with the Gulf region and Asia make it an ideal destination for such an expansion. This new service will contribute to Ghana's aviation sector growth and its broader economic development.
The announcement followed the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) between Etihad Airways and Total Air Alliance Limited (TAAL). TAAL, a member of the GHI Assets Group, has been formally appointed as Etihad Airways' General Sales Agent (GSA) in Ghana. Mr. Javier Alija, Vice President for Global Sales and Distribution for Etihad Airways, stated that the Accra route underscores the airline's commitment to strengthening its presence across Africa.
Mr. Alija expressed confidence in Total Air Alliance's ability to successfully position the airline in Ghana. He highlighted that the new service will provide Ghanaian travelers with convenient access to Etihad's global network through its Abu Dhabi hub. This will also enhance business and tourism links between Ghana, the UAE, and other international destinations.
Ahead of the inaugural flight, a dedicated market development team, led by Mr. Nii Anyetei Akofio-Sowah, General Manager of Total Air Alliance Limited, has begun engaging key stakeholders. These stakeholders include travel agencies, online travel agencies, and corporate travel managers within Ghana's aviation and travel industry. Mr. Akofio-Sowah noted that the airline's arrival will introduce Ghanaian travelers to Etihad's award-winning premium services, modern fleet, and renowned Emirati hospitality.
Mr. Christopher Isaiah, Group General Manager, Commercial, GHI Assets Group, emphasized the company's extensive experience across African aviation markets. This experience positions them to support Etihad's long-term growth ambitions on the continent. He described Ghana as the beginning of a broader African expansion strategy aimed at connecting the continent more efficiently to global destinations.
Ms. Lola Adefope, Executive Director of Total Air Alliance Limited, described Ghana as an ideal destination for Etihad's African expansion. She cited the country's growing economy, increasing demand for premium air travel, and strong business and diaspora links with the Gulf region and Asia. She added that Ghanaian travelers increasingly seek high-quality services, reliability, and seamless international connections, making the country a strategic addition to Etihad's global route network.
This development is expected to stimulate economic activity in Ghana. It will boost tourism, facilitate trade, and create new job opportunities within the aviation and hospitality sectors. The increased connectivity will also benefit Ghanaian businesses seeking to expand their reach into the Middle East and beyond. This will further integrate Ghana into the global economy.
The entry of a major international carrier like Etihad Airways signals growing confidence in Ghana's economic stability and potential. It also highlights the country's strategic geographical location as a gateway to West Africa. This move will likely encourage other international airlines to consider expanding their operations in Ghana, further enhancing the country's air travel infrastructure and competitiveness.
