Emirates, the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline, has brought its Travel Rehearsal programme to Ghana. This initiative reinforces the airline’s commitment to making air travel more accessible and inclusive for all passengers.
The Travel Rehearsal offers a guided simulation of the complete air travel journey. It familiarises individuals with autism with airport procedures and onboard environments. This aims to reduce anxiety and build confidence before an actual flight.
This program fits into a broader effort to enhance accessibility in Ghana's transport sector. It aligns with growing awareness of diverse passenger needs. The Ghana Airports Company Limited has reaffirmed its dedication to providing world-class facilities for all travelers.
Emirates partnered with HopeSetters Autism Centre for this initiative. They hosted students on the autism spectrum and their guardians at Accra International Airport earlier in March. The Emirates Airport Services team in Ghana spearheaded this local effort.
Salem Almana, Emirates’ Country Manager for Ghana, stated the initiative is about more than travel. He said, “It is about building confidence, creating opportunities, and ensuring that every individual feels welcomed, respected, and supported throughout their journey.” Mrs. Bridget Jewell Baaba Enchill, Executive Director of HopeSetters Autism Centre, added that the program helps remove barriers for individuals with autism. This allows them to travel with greater confidence and independence.
This program is expected to encourage other airlines and transport providers to adopt similar accessibility measures. It could also lead to increased investment in infrastructure supporting diverse needs. Decision-makers and travelers will watch for further expansions of such inclusive programs.
The simulation involved a full walk-through of the airport. Participants experienced check-in with imitation boarding cards, immigration, security, and the airport lounge. They then proceeded to the arrival journey, including customs and baggage reclaim.
Emirates became the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline in 2025. Over 35,000 cabin crew and ground staff completed specialised autism awareness training. This training provides employees with in-depth knowledge of the autism spectrum and personalised support strategies.
The Accra Travel Rehearsal marks the fourth rollout in Africa. Previous programs occurred in Durban, Harare, and Luanda in 2025. Since April 2025, Emirates’ Airport Services teams have arranged 40 such rehearsals globally.
This includes airports in Athens, Bali, Bangalore, Barcelona, and Brussels, among many others. The widespread implementation shows Emirates' global commitment to accessible travel. It sets a new standard for air travel inclusivity in Ghana and beyond.
